Good stealthy follower
So, I'm an assassin/thief, and hardly use followers because they're always easily detected, no matter their sneak level, and fortify sneak enchantments don't work (according to a nice wiki i use). So, just seeing if anytone has a follower they like using for sneakiness, whetehr from mod or vanilla.

get Amazing Follower Tweaks. It allows the option for your followers to go into stealth mode, making them invisible, and undetectable. then just get a stealthy looking follower from vanilla or mods.

Definitely AFT.

But if you want a vanilla game look up the followers list at UESP. The selection is limited since Bethesda seems to think that the vast majority of players are going to be heavy armor, 2 handed weapon fighters so they have only a couple of magic-users and stealthy followers.

Inigo.
I like Annekke Crag-Jumper. she is a ranger, from darkwater crossing and can become a follower after a kill badit leader quest she offers. if i give her only a bow, she hangs back instead of charging in after my first shot like melee often do when i'm sniping.

as for indoor sneaking, i always leave them back a ways, or even outside until i know what it's like inside. then, i usually park them somewhere strategic and kite to them rather than risk them pulling adds.

Amazing Follower Tweak adds a lot of options that are very useful.
Inigo doesn't work well with AFT.

I haven't tried UFO, but that one has a compatibility patch for inigo I believe

So bascially what I'm doing. Hehe. I have Janessa atm (from Drunken Huntsman). She's a ranger, so, using AFT I explored a bit, and found I could have her hang back a bit. There was one mod that I was using that changed follower stealth AI, and could make it so they never initiated combat until we were attacked, and they wouldn't use torches if they had one..but it just made them more detectable. XD. And she's epic looking in the Raven Witch Armor by Saytr. His armor mods are all really nice (not a fan of the drakul set, but meh). Too bad they aren't compatible with beast races, and elves can have nose/ear clipping issues, but still great. And now I'm rambling. XD

For Vanilla stealth followers, no mod tweaking them. The best are based on actual sneak stats

Dark Brotherhood Initiates - you must complete the DB questline to get them, they are the best with regard to stats
Cicero - again, complete the DB questline, he is excellent if you don't mind the craziness
Aela the Huntress - you must finish the Comapanions questline to get her
Jenassa - one of the best sneak followers that you don't need a quest for. Based on her stats, she is essentially an only slightly weaker version of Aela with no quests attached, just hire her and go.

Borgak is an orc-ess that uses heavy armor, but her sneak stat is very high for some reason.
Dunno exactly the stat, but also Serana seems to be a good sneaker.

In my experience tough, in vanilla skyrim, Aela the Huntress is the only one that not only has an high sneak stat, but seems to delay attacks a little bit and prefears to stay behind and throw arrows. Other followers that have an high sneak stat seem to run in the middle of the room when THEY detect enemies, thus gving away my presence.

No kidding... best follower, ever. Won award for best mod and that was overall not just the follower category. Inigo say Lydia's face is as pretty as her head is empty. An incredible mod, really.

Agreed, completely and I prefer Aela, but some people don't want to join the Companions or the DB, so I presented Jenassa as a viable option as you don't need a quest for her. For characters just starting out, she's a lot of bang for your buck. There is also that Dark elf from Dragonborn, but I'm not sure how his sneak is. The Mercenary. I've heard great things about him. I had forgotten about Serana. She is very good too.

Muffle enchanted boots work on followers (muffle boots, when enchanted by the player, offer 100% noise reduction). You have to look for those at vendors because IIRC named items with muffle, such as thieves guild boots, can't be disenchanted (and they offer a 50% noise reduction only, too).

And now, Janessa is now a vampire stay-at home mom, who works two jobs. Runs her own shop, and my merchant stand outside my house, while taking care of both of my boys, Blaise, and Samuel. XD Will be getting a house carl soon though, once I fix the Jarl Ulfric... I should try out Inigo though.

P.S. I could use some help with Ulfric. He somehow got stuck in the message to whiterun quest, and never gave me my orders, so I had to use console to complete that quest, but now he wanders around whiterun, showing up in my house, giving me random dialogue about which holds we need to take, and I can't start the battle for whiterun quest...any fixes? realoding previous save won't work, sadly, as I don't have one far enough back. And because of this, even though I've also helped out over 5 people in Whiterun, until I do that quest, I can't become thane and have a housecarl, to help out my poor wife.

Get his REF ID and type Prid 'Ref ID'
After that use the command "moveto player" to move him to where he needs to be.

Not at all sure if this will fix it but it's worth a shot. You could also look up the console command for the quest your trying to finish and change the stage of that quest.

Edit: His Ref ID is 0001B131

Edit 2: the command (assuming your on stormcloak side) for advancing the quest to an appropriate stage should be: "SetStage CWSiegeObj 1"

Let me know if either of these work.
