CTD when saving
Hello, i have recently bought a new computer, and i wanted to play some skyrim! i played for a while but then suddenly, when i tried to quicksave it CTD'ed and also closed itself, i haven't installed mods recently(well i have but they don't conflict or anything like that, and besides, i had saved several times before that with same mods installed) and it makes the game almost unplayable. if there is any fix for this, please respond as fast as you can :)

People here say this works.

1. Load an older save (as long as it doesn't have CTD on save glitch, then load it)
2. Create a NEW save (through pause menu)
3. Type in player.kill
4. Load your latest save (the one that had CTD glitch)
5. Type in player.kill
6. Try saving (I usually just use quicksave)
Hi, i've tried this and i'm very thankfull for your help, but it seems that when it tries to load it again, it crashes in the excact same way :/

You can try going indoors and removing all your inventory. Especially any mod related items. Wait indoors for 31 days and make a hard save.

How many saves do you have in your save folder?

I know im like talking to you from the future but this wont work for me, any ideas?
hey, it's been a while since i "solved" the problem so i don't remember the details, but i remember loading up an older save and it working fine for a while and then the same thing would happen so i loaded up a save i made an hour before that and it worked fine again. hope it helps :)

Did you save/crash in outdoors? If so, go to skyrim.ini in my documents, games, Skyrim and change the uExterior Cell Buffer from 32 (yours might be different) to 24. It fixed my crash problems.

ALTERNATIVE FIX - Still no need for mod changes
The method above didn't actually work for me, but I tried a bunch of things along the same lines and finally something worked. No more CrashToDesktops :)

Don't know what actually made it work but here's what I did:
1. Loaded older save (without CTD - just like above method)
2. Created a NEW save (through pause menu)
3. Closed Skyrim
4. Restored a backup (.bak) quicksave file
----(Go to Documents -> My Games -> Skyrim -> Saves...First delete "quicksave.ess" [this is your current Quicksave]. Then turn "quicksave.ess.bak" into "quicksave.ess" [you will have to make sure you can see file extensions in Windows to edit names])
5. Now, make a copy of this restored quicksave (you'll now have a "quicksave.ess - Copy")
6. Rename it anything (I named it "COPYquicksave.ess") for use in-game.

7. Load up your NEW save.
8. Try to Quicksave. [it worked for me]
9. Load up your COPYquicksave.
10. Try to Quicksave. [this also worked]

Fixed for me. Don't know what steps actually made it work but that's what I did. If you need any elaborations feel free to let me know, I subbed to this discussion :)

When starting from an old save if it opens you must save again manually over it. This will leviate most of your problems anything you have done after that save (higher numbered older saves can be deleted) and play from new save. (Of course you lose a bit of your game, that you have already completed, better than a restart)
Simular if removed a mod going back to a clean save before adding mod, open and save again will remove data. (Game will show pop up window at start that some content has been removed or changed)

I really need help here, I have a problem that whenever I save in any way, my game CTD's. But for some reason this only happens when I'm in riften....your guess is as good as mine.

Definitely sounds like a load order problem or some corrupt file on riften

So, what quicksave? I never use quicksave so I have no quicksave, thus no quicksave backup.

How do you save, then? Do you have an older save regardless? Use with above method, instead of quicksave. Create copies, and experiment. Also, I suppose you could do this with old auto-saves.
