Followers equipping and unequipping weapons constantly
I am experiencing a weird glitch in my game
Lydia is constantly drawing and sheathing her weapons during combat for some reason not able to fight at all however this only happens if she uses a shield if I take the shield out of her equipment she draws her weapon normally.
I use a ton of mods but I am unsure if this is caused by a mod and which is causing that if so, maybe somebody has experienced this bug already and knows a way to fix it? I am using the journey mod pack by the way

I had that happen to me before, but can't recall what caused it or how I fixed it. I think it has to do with what your NPC has in their inventory, but i am not sure.

By any chance are you using wearable lanterns and does your NPC have one?

I have the mod wearable lanterns but my npc doesn't use one maybe I will try to disable that mod and see if that fixes it for now I just gave lydia a greatsword
Dexter Aug 3, 2015 @ 8:13am
Well I use wearable lanterns without any problems.

It was just one of the mods I thought might be causing it at the time. If your follower didn't have one you should be fine using the mod.

Another mod I now recall that might have caused the problem was left hand rings, because my NPC was wearing two rings, a necklace, a cape, a lantern, and a sword with several magical staves in their inventory. I think their equip script went haywire trying to deal with all that stuff.

Big question: do you use Dual Sheath Redux?
driveandkill Aug 20, 2015 @ 12:22pm
Yes, my workaround for this is to just give lydia a greatsword

lidia has been glitching from time to time for me as of late. one handed sword, and a shield. she's saying her battle dialog but stands there and twitches. the sword rotates from normal to edge up.

HD DLC, and unoffical skyrim patch, HD unoffical skyrim patch are all that is installed.

if i save and close skyrim, then start and load it clears it for me.

I had the same thing with Lydia once. She would draw and resheath her sword three times before stopping. I've never used wearable lanterns or dual sheath redux but do have left hand rings. Not sure if Lydia had one in her inventory at the time though. Like Dexter I cannot remember what I did to get rid of the problem but it's more than likely that I either verified the game cache or reverted to an earler save.

I installed left handed rings because i missed being able to equip 2 like in oblivion but i uninstalled it because it caused too many problems iwth my other mods but now im having the same problem as OP. npcs half way draw their swords then the animation resets and theyre constantly drawing their weapons and i didnt have this problem until i installed left handed rings (which i have since uninstalled so im curious as how to fix this....)

It's late, but I stumbled upon this while searching for the solution myself. Assuming you have DSR, the only solution I've found (without uninstalling the damn thing) is to disable shields on the back for NPCs via the MCM menu.

As for Left Hand Rings, the issue probably comes from inventory slots - The unreadied shield takes slot 60, and I believe LHR does the same.

yeah i ultimately uninstalled all my mods and re-installed them 1 by 1 since i never found a solution. I figure LHR screwed with the item slot and even tho i had uninstalled it, it still was causing conflicts with the shields.

I believe I have fixed this issue.

I found out it was save game dependant - something happens to the save that makes the script references go out of whack, and it happens from then on, regardless of mods and mod order etc.

I loaded an earlier save, as well as a different character, and it was not present on them despite it appearing beyond fixing on my main save.

I made a new save game in a quiet place with no followers etc (no idea if this made a difference). I backed this up to a separate folder in case I stuffed up.

I then used Save Game Script Cleaner by Hadoram
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D52363%26preview%3D&pUp=1

I didn't bother reading all the instructions for it - my save game was backed up, so I figured I couldn't do anything too bad.

I then ran through the buttons, activating all of them:
* Fix Script Instances
* Delete all #
* Clean other
* Del. broken activities
* Advanced - then select both buttons - Remove scripts attached to nonexistent created forms and Remove scripts having invalid variables
*Mod editor - Selected All - then unchecked Skyrim.esm, Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, HearthFires.esm and Dragonborn.esm (00 to 04) - then click the button delete slected mods forms and Delete Selected mods scripts. At the bottom of this same screen I then clicked Delete Created Forms (FF) and Delete Created Scripts (FF)
*Back on the main screen, click Clean formlists
*Reset havok

I then repeated the first 4 steps again - a couple of new things were deleted that did not show up the first time through.

I then saved it as edited save and loaded it up.

All the scripts had to re-load and the script settings were reset to default - not a big problem.

I then went and belted a guard over the head. He pulled his shield out properly.

I then reloaded, and it worked again.

I then fast travelled to a different city, and tried a different guard. It worked again.

Sometimes, they'd try draw it two or three times, which I think is a different (maybe vanilla) bug - but they got it out and started fighting like normal. Loop fixed.

For now.

Hope it works for you guys. I spent ages searching forums and came up with nothing.

Cheers,
Mick

when i started a new game it did it to me. it isn't save specific.
mick Jan 27, 2017 @ 1:35am
Grundy - I promise you it was for me. why would I lie? The toon I started YEARS ago didn't have it. The three I started over the last few months all had it. My fix worked - caused a few other issues I had to iron out, but it worked. Now none of them have it.

well im glad you found a fix. i honestly havent tried in awhile. i just gave up. it kinda killed the immersion for me. maybe ill pick up skyrim again and start a new character and see if it fixes...
