While people argue how difficult or not the game is, the adept settting is the more leveled playing with 1:1 damage. Mods can further change difficulty in a much better and focused way for those so inclined -- best done after a playthrough on vanilla.
Difficulty | Damage Dealt | Damage Taken
-----------------------------------------
Novice | x2 | x0.5
Apprentice | x1.5 | x0.75
Adept | x1 | x1
Expert | x0.75 | x1.5
Master | x0.5 | x2
Legendary | x0.25 | x3

Once you reach:
-Level 5, default is "Apprentice"
-Level 10, default is "Adept"
-Level 25, "Expert"
-Level 50, "Master"
Nevertheless, I think "Adept" is still considered the general/average difficulty ('normal' difficulty?) for most players that aren't too early on in the game.
It seems like Novice-Apprentice correspond with the typical "Easy" difficulty, Adept with "Normal", Expert-Master with "Hard", and Legendary with "Hardcore"
Awesome; thanks. I will begin at Adept then.
That's pretty much how I associate the levels.
You're welcome Lampros, enjoy the game and if you weren't aware you can change difficulty at any time.
No it doesn't. Default difficulty has nothing to do with level.
