So after i defeat Alduin in Sovengard and return to tamriel its the end? no cutscene no celebration, no you are the new high king thingy? is this really the end of skyrim?

Well i am with him , because i defeated him and it shows me a place that i was been and i got the ember something and then i dont know what i need to do there. And i think its the end and thats it.

Once you kill Alduin, you talk to Conan and go back to Skyrim and talk to Mario and have his dragon comrades chat you up. That's basically the ending. It's not a cutscene, but having all those dragons flying around without cheats or mods is pretty neat.

The only change that comes from defeating Alduin is now not all dragons will randomly attack you.

No, it's not the end, but it WAS a big let down, for what was supposed to be the main story.

But it isnt the end, per say. Skyrims main story isnt as main-story-ey as it should be imo. With all these different quest lines from the Brotherhood to the Companions to Civil War to just finding some old dude his hat, the main quest's ending should leave us going "Holycrap-that-was-the-most-beautiful-and-fulfilling-thing-i-have-ever-witnessed-in-my-life!" instead of just letting us check off another quest line. Plus where the heck did Paarthunax go? I though he was gonna start purifying dragons or something so i can go whoop some pale Vampire butt with an army of dragons...

Well i completed almost every side quest most of them were cool, but the main story was kinda meh. I was hoping for some dialog with the blades but instead they are telling me to kill paarthunax. The main story should be more rewarding after a hard fight with alduin (he died after 3 power attacks) not just 7 dragons flying around me and telling words that i cant understand

Yup, it was pretty disappointing that the populus gave not one toss that you sailed overhead on the back of dragon, to go and stop the end of days, but you know, bears are important.

The only town Alduin destroyed was Helgen and everyone was evacuated just fine. The real threat are the numerous bears dotting the landscape. And besides, why would anyone celebrate when there are still lesser dragons around? To 99% of the population, Alduin is just another dragon. Only you and a handful of people know what threat he really posed.

Apart from all the songs sung in the taverns about the return of Alduin the World Eater. It's part of the populus' mythology and psyche that Alduin will return to destroy Tamriel, so via the Dragonborn's actions people would know I reckon. Your housecarls and hangers on spread the word when they're hanging around their home base. Or something. :)

Okay...am I a total idiot...? I thought that the civil war stuff was the main quest line? I defeated Alduin forever ago but have been putting off choosing a side in the war because I thought that was what led to the "end". That's my MO in games...get just SO FAR in the main quest, complete all side quests, wander forever, tackle the main quest when I'm damn good and ready.

Skyrim is the game of side-quests and not of the main quests. I liked them better and also after defeating Alduin I brought back the shiled to Markath1s Jarl, and then got a nice house. The game only ends of you want to.

You can restart the game with another gender and faction, and also join to the other side in the Civil war.
