Elder Scroll Missing From Inventory?
first off I'm in the base game. I just picked up the Elder Scroll from the Tower of Mzark. the Elder Knowledge quest completed and I was given a new quest directing me to read it at the Throat of the World. But I when I arrived, the Scroll was no where to be found in my inventory. I opened the "all" tab and scrolled through the list, but to no avil.

I went back to the tower just to make sure I didn't drop it. nothing. I reloaded a save and collected it again, still nothing. I also tried the console command to add the scroll but despite the game saying "Elder Scroll added" there was still nothing in my inventory. Is there a workaround for this rather game-breaking bug?

Also, I collected the scroll, and procceded to complete the Discerning the Transmundane. No changes.

I found this "If you leave the Tower of Mzark without collecting the Elder Scroll and complete Discerning the Transmundane, collecting the scroll later will have no effect and this quest will be blocked.
If this happens, the Scroll will not appear in your inventory after collection. This can be resolved by collecting the Scroll and then spawning it in your inventory with player.additem 2d513 1. You should be able to read the Scroll after using this console code." from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Elder_Knowledge . Hope this does it.

Sadly no. I collected the scroll first, then tried to read it before completing the Discerning the Transmundane quest.

If you have Dawnguard try player.additem xx0126dc 1 where xx is the position of dawnguard in load order. Vanilla would be

00 skyrim.esm
01 update.esm
02 dawnguard.esm

So player.additem 020126dc 1

Sadly the only DLC I have is Hearthfire. I tried the command you gave. it said "Elder Scroll Added" but it never showed up in my inventory.

Do you have the unofficial patches installed?

+Stoob No, I haven't installed it yet.

QOFWGKTA is right! Just get arrested (make sure to sleep in the bed to fulfill your sentence)

Funnily enough (forgot I even made this thread) that was the reason the scroll was missing: When I got thrown in prison I lockpicked the door and escaped, not knowing that it was part of the quest.
