I don't personally stress about those jobs. You don't need to complete them to proceed in the TG main questline, but only to finalize it. Guild benfits up to 125 jobs, so my characters just picks them up, completes them when they happen to be in the area and give them back, once they have a reason to return back to Rifter. That will (IMO) keep it fun, as opposed to trying to complete them all in a row.
Special missons will come in sooner or later, along with the finishing the questline. Spending some time to do them also makes you feel as you may have actually earned the place, when you have been doing the thieves work longer than just running the questline trough.

In case you wish to play as a thief and run after failing a quest, here is a mod that I am using myself. My Breton lass is currently doing mischef around Whiterun and Riften, becuase she is not welcomed to Solitude, Markarth or Windhelm for a while.
