Is health regeneration even useful?!
I could be fully decked out in full regeneration armor and take a regeneration potion, and the health just slowly ticks along. So I have to ask: In combat, is regeneration helpful at all?

Like.... In what cases does a regeneration potion surpass the total healed of a regular straight-up instant heal potion? They just seem utterly useless.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I just don't see much in-combat use for it since everything slows to rediculousness.

You are correct.
Renegeration is more like quickly healing between fight's.
I dont think you even regenerate health during combat.
Then again i always play mage so i have plenty of healing spells ready at a moments notice.
I suggest going to a bandit lair(easy prey)
Save before entering.
Fight without renenative gear.
Reload.
Fight with reneative gear.
And see if it make a difference.

Health Regeneration is indeed primarily for between fights, allowing you to save Instant heals for in-combat emergencies.

However, since you have decent Health regeneration naturally anyway (not to mention the basic healing spell if you don't care about maintaining character), it's basically pointless. Especially since there's generally at least a minute between instances of combat.

The only regen worth having is Stamina or Magicka, and that's only really relevant for hybrid, Spellsword/Knight types.

What IS useful are elemental and magical resistances. Stack them all up to 85% (their caps). Magic resist applies separately to elemental (and all elemental damage counts as magic - whether it came from a magic source or not...), making that closer to 98%.

On the other hand, without those enchants, regular armour blocks no elemental/magical damage - no matter how well you smith it. You might as well go into battle with mages / dragons / whatever naked if you lack your resists.

I'll give you the stats and let you decide how useful Health regen is. Stamina outside combat regens at 5.00. Magica outside combat regens at 3.00. Health outside combat regens at .70. Stamina in combat regens at .35. Magica in combat regens at .33. Health in combat regens at .00. These are the vanilla unadjusted numbers. There are items that adjust the regen rate. But with a health regen rate inside combat of .00.....

Oh, there's a time when improved regen can be useful - if you become a vampire. You effectively lose your regular regen when outside during the day.

While the above are correct, there is one character in the game that has regeneration pushed to the extreme, and even he has to use health potions at least in the fights I've had with him. That is the Ebony Warrior. You only get to meet him after you reach level 80. And he is tough, and seems to regenerate if you and your allies don't keep him on the defensive.

The no regen in combat must be an error, I recall that If I prolong the fight as long as possible, I can eventually outlast tougher enemies, it just takes a long time. Just drawing the fight out can turn the tide since you heal slowly, and they don't heal at all.

On the other hand, trolls WILL regenerate faster than you, so the only way to beat them is to give everything you have, or tap fire with flames

I know this is a really late reply and I'm really late to the party, but no regen is not worthless. Take a fortify restoration potion and then choose the regen standing stone and find out (the effect will stay as long as you keep the standing stone). The better the potion the better the effect (100000% potion = 100000% regen)

First off, you aren't late for the party, you have turned up to a party that has been over for over eight years....... EIGHT YEARS!

Second in combat all regen is virtually useless, it increases the rate at which the relevant stat recovers...... BUT IN COMBAT THAT RATE IS SO LOW THAT YOU ARE BETTER OFF DRINKING A POTION THAT RESTORES IT..... Yes, it can make a difference, but less than a potion that just gives you back 200 points of health/magicka/stamina. The chance that the slight difference caused by a regen potion will save you from dying ro allow you to cast that spell are less than 1%.
