FREE!! Windows 10 & Skyrim Compatibility Testing
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=500687692

I am trying to figure out the optimum compatibility settings for Skyrim and it's tools with Windows 10. Settings #1 are the settings that transfered over when updating my system. After a good bit of testing It seems that the compatibility for Win7 is not needed. I am currently advocating using settings #2.

0. Windows 10 Clean Install
No compatabilties checked.

1. Steam.exe ------------------------nothing checked
skse_loader.exe----------------compatibility for Win7, run as admin
skyrim_launcher.exe----------compatibility for Win7, run as admin
TESV.exe-------------------------compatibility for Win7, run as admin
modorganizer.exe & NMM--run as admin
loot.exe----------------------------nothing checked
TES5Edit.exe-------------------nothing checked
wrye bash.exe------------------nothing checked

These are the settings I am currently advocating.
2. Steam.exe ----------------nothing checked
skse_loader.exe--------run as admin
skyrim_launcher.exe--run as admin
TESV.exe-----------------run as admin
modorganizer.exe------run as admin
loot.exe--------------------nothing checked
TES5Edit.exe-----------nothing checked
wrye bash.exe----------nothing checked

If anyone is willing to test, just try running Skyrim and the tools with both setups and see if any issues arise. For those that use NMM please test both as I run MO. To change these settings open File Explorer make your way to the file you want then right click on the file > Properties. In the window that comes up click on the Compatibilities Tab. Make the changes to the appropriate settings.

Please respond in this format, this will make it much quicker to compile the answers. Comments are welcome, though.

Original Windows Version (8.1 home)
Settings that worked for you. (0,1,2)
CPU
GPU

Mine would be

8.1 Home
2
AMD FX9590
Radeon R9 280X
How many days since update?

Update: It appears that after the 30 day rollback period ends for Windows 10 (mine ended last night) compatibility settings are no longer needed. I know for a fact they were needed yesterday as I was testing and the main files would not run without "Run as Admin" checked. If others would confirm this it would be appreciated.

If you are on a new install of Skyrim it appears no compatability settings are needed. If you have problems I would suggest using the "New Settings".

Thanks in advance for your help.

Nice on no compatabilities checked. For me the files in list 2 must be this way for both launchers and tesv or they will not run. I have found that with MO I get an error message, but it will run.

Edit: MO will run with no errors with "run as admin" checked. The error only comes when I try to run with no compatibilities.

Might drum up more business if you advertise that it is free and maybe ask Steam for an in-game pop up. Worked for MS. 0-o

Thanks, what division would I contact at Steam to see if they will do the popup? The more to test the better.

That would be the "slim chance" department right across the hall from customer support.

Might also need to state the version of WinX you are using, i.e. Home, Pro, etc.

Anyway, running WinX Pro and Steam, Skyrim, SKSE & 157 mods (Unofficial patches for each DLC and location additions/upgrades for the most part) and have encountered no issues. Have not had to alter any components compatibility settings. YMMV.

Also note, that this was a clean install of WinX Pro and not an upgrade, and a new install of Steam and Skyrim onto this box, if that makes any difference.

Don't know if you have found this, on programs you are having problems with just right click on the file and there is a compatibility troubleshooter available. If you wouldn't mind posting the programs and the compatibility settings that work.

@ kjrockplayer thanks for the quick reply.

I wonder if a clean install of Skyrim for some reason does not need admin on launcher and tesv? My laptop has a clean install Skyrim will have to check it tonight.

One user reported a fresh install (low-level format) of Win 10 Pro (not an update) installed flawlessly (regarding Skyrim) assigning proper permissions and updating the graphics driver. I'll try to get the user's Win 10 Pro default settings.
