Which race is good for an Illusion Mage/ Assassin?

I would like to create a player that is good at Archery, Sneak and illusion and if I'm lucky even destruction. I was going to play as a Dark Elf but correct me if I'm wrong, Dark Elves aren't that liked in Skyrim (I'm also looking for a little bit of a role playing aspect too)
I'm considering:
High Elf
Wood Elf
Dark Elf
Breton

If you guys could tell me which race to go with that would be great! Cheers.

Be a dark elf and live in Winterhold.

I don't know about "best", but from watching yt LPs, I'd guess the most popular of that type would be Argonian or Khajit.

If you're playing a thief, do you really mind not being super-popular? (I'd say overall Altmer are even less well-liked, although Dunmer certainly get the brunt of it in Windhelm, but people tend to associate Altmer with the Thalmor, so even outside Windhelm they're probably less popular.)

A racial bonus that provides elemental/magical resistance is more valuable than any skill boosts. Skills can be learnt... over and over again, in fact.

So out of that list, I'd be recommending the Breton.

You could go with anything as racial abilities don't matter at much at higher levels. High Elves do get the advantage of starting with Fury, so you can be using that from hour one, and Bretons have magic resistance that is good throughout the game. But it really doesn't matter much past the first few levels. You could go completely against the grain and be an Orc Archer/Illusionist if you wanted.

Yeah, I think it's much more fun to pick a combination that sparks an idea of a story in my mind - doesn't have to be a super-complex novel-length fanfic type story, just something like "a Dunmer spellsword who is looking for the Orc chieftain her mother claims is her real father" or "a Thalmor-sympathising Altmer vampire who wants to control minds by becoming a Mistress of Illusion" or whatnot.
