Did you try the updating/console command thing? I never considered windowed-mode when I had the issue.
Update anyway- I had already tried reinstalling the included C++ redistributable, and then downloading a fresh copy of the 2010 redistributable with no fix.
But last night I tried downloading and installing the 2013 version and played an hour or so with no crashes, at least so far, on Full Screen, so maybe that was it.
Fingers crossed.
Have you recently been to the Soul Cairn? If you don't finish the quest from Jiub it causes problems.
Try the solution I mentioned previously.
You can also go back to the Soul Cairn and finish Jiubs quest.
You can use this mod, but it requires the mod to be installed before you cause the glitch or before you enter the Soul Cairn to be safe.

I am surprised this problem hasn't been addressed by unofficial patches.
Has anyone been able to verify or disprove this particular notion?
Thanks! But I finally did go ahead and build Lakeview Manor, and aside from the rather minor annoyance of having a Dragon skeleton take up residence on my front lawn there haven't been any further problems with the C++ thing. I think updating to the most recent redistrubutable was key to solving at least my individual problems with it.
(And I was able to banish the dragon at last by figuring out the relevant console commands, thankfully..! )
So hopefullly Hearthfire isn't going to rear it's head in the future...
Lol, go on a quest to stop crashing.
