volkihar ruins - can't fill the portal vessel with soul gem shards

hi, i'm in Valerica's lab. i've read her journal, picked up the 3 required items, two i can place in the portal vessel, the 3rd item - soul void shards, when i try dropping them into the vessel i get the message "you cannot equip this item". i've tried reloading the game and going through the same sequence and each time the gem shards will not drop into the vessel. please help, tx much, rob

check the bugs section. nothing exactly on that but setting the stage might help. i am thinking stage 75 for you.

All you need to do is remove the vampirism from your player character (there's a command for this) and it will proceed as normal. No need to dismiss followers. It fixed all problems I was having on this stage with one simple command. Type "setstage 000EAFD5 10" and voila.
