How To Set NPCs As Nonessential Question
Is there a console command to set an NPC to nonessential status, and if so, what is it?

In your Skyrim.ini file, put

[GAMEPLAY]
bEssentialTakeNoDamage=0

at the bottom to make all NPCs nonessential.

That's a good tip, but I don't want to make all the NPCs nonessential. I just wanted to know how to set certain individual NPCs as nonessential. Thanks anyway.

What goes into the [baseid] spot. I've tried clicking an npc and copying the 8 digit hexidecimal number, but that didn't work

Wiki quote:[www.uesp.net]
"To find an NPC's base ID, however, you can either a) browse to their respective page (see: People and/or NPCs) or b) use the help function in-game to search for them by name, recording whatever value matches their name under the "NPC_" category of result. Once you have the base ID, enter the command using either 1 to set him/her immortal or 0 to set him/her mortal. For example, setessential a2c8e 1 would set Lydia as immortal. "

There are some NPCs that can't be set non-essential this way. The only way to do it is to edit them in Creation Kit. Believe me, I've tried to kill Serana, but the game won't let me no matter how high my console-fu is.
Ya So many times I tried it on the imperial general failed

Brinjolf is the same way. Idk about Serana, but I think his issue is because he's set as both essential and invulnerable, takes no damage whatsoever. As I most commonly use this command to cleanse Riften of the thieves guild, I can say it works for the Blackbriars, Maul, Mercer, etc.

For Brinjolf, what I do is the same setessential 0 command, but followed by targeting him inside console, and using

damageav health 5000

To be honest, I'm very new to console commands, and am experiencing a glitch in the Whispering Door, where I can't kill either Balgruuf or Farengar, I can't pickpocket either of them either. I'm trying to make Balgruuf non-essential, and can't seem to get it to work. I hate to ask this, but could somebody PLEASE type out the code to make him non-essential?

Whispering Door Key 00028d8b

I would much rather give you the key. As long as you are on the proper stage of the quest this code and acquiring the key like this will not hurt you at all. keep the save from before using this command for a little while.

Player.additem 28d8b 1

If you truly can not acquire it any other way than by all means use the code.

BTW- you do not want to ever kill Balgruuf. Farengar ok but I would rather keep him alive as well.

Farengar should always be killable...

Essential until this particular point, where the OP is stuck, in the Whispering door quest. He's a main quest giver, for the Dragonstone.
