Are adopting children worth it?
I mean, what do you really get with kids anyway?

In a power-gaming sense? Probably not. You get some sort of a beneficial effect from sleeping in your home with kids there, and if you give them presents you get the Gift of Charity effect, I think. They're not meant to be 'worth it', it's an RP type thing, is your character soft-hearted and maternal/paternal? Consider adoption. Are they uncaring and find children incredibly irritating? Probably don't.

Skyrim Children are like normal Children. oh, they are cute at first, playing hide and seek and bringing you little gifts. After a while though they start to get annoying and needy. You cant wait for them to move out or a dragon to eat them. Whatever comes first.

Might not be worth it - but they sure are tasty!

They're just an extra "thing" to do in Skyrim, along with the house building from Hearthfire. Although there's a lot involved with building your own house, your options to choose from are not really a lot when you think of it and is just slightly more involved than buying an existing house..... The children and the building are just "things" you don't really need to do but can if you want.

Well, if you want to adopt children we will want to know the following:

Your income, your history of abuse towards any partners, do you smoke, do you drink, we would like to see all your bank statements, what religion are you, what colour are you, how old are you.

No matter your answers, we won't allow you to adopt, welcome to the 21st century.

(Meanwhile thousands of kiddies are in desperate need of a home and a loving family)

Your application status has been set to "Not Fit to Be a Parent". Expect a visit from one of our officers. Please do not leave the premises. You will be visited shortly. ;-)

Just for the little trinkets they give you once in a while, it's worth it! Plus it make for a more lively house.

*Hmpf*
My previous game (Caravans of Skyrim) I had my daughters as (UFO) followers. I did not touch their AIs, so they were mostly running away from the trouble.

Mostly.

I left them with Sylgja and horses, and Faendal to guard them. Lydia came with me, to deal with a large Frosworn camp. We were smashing and grapping and burning and slashing and...

... suddenly Sofie and Lucia were running around the camp with their daggers and stabbing that nasty fireball throwing hagraven!

Later we returned back to camp. Sylgja was wandering around the river and Faendal practising his poses (he is doing that all the time... when not talking about Camilla Valerius.) Sylgja was happy see us.

- Hello my love. Back from some adventure?
- Yeah. With our daughters. You remmber them? Our D.A.U.G.H.T.E.R.S. I found them from that Forsworn camp, slicing and dicing a magically mutated old woman, who threw fierballs at us. They were supposed to be here with you!
- How wonderful, my love.
- Fu, fu, fu, fuuuuuuuuuus....

you're not supposed to stick your fingers inside them

No, you don't get it.
They stick their fingers in me!

I actually like children. I am an old boyscout and used to have kids and youngsters around. I wouldn't mind having a family of my own. :)

But, stabbing hagravens would be absolutely prohibited. Asking mommy to fry one with overpowered array of spells - behind the cover and from the safe distance - would be okay. If that damn crow comes close enough to interrupt dad's coffee hour, then fun ends soon enoguh.

I am not a strict man, but I really like my coffee warm.

Define "worth"

You'll possibly feel sorry for them especially the ones begging, they're cute and they're fun, up to a point, their dialogue does become very monotonous after a while (what NPC doesn't?). They offer no reward other than the feel good factor.

If you really need to the ask the question "whats the point?" then they're probably not for you.
