Beware, Nexxus Mods are just a frustrating rip off.
While playing Skyrim a friend told me I could increase my game experience by using Nexxus Mods. So I tried a few. They seemed to work great for a few days, then when I went to load my game it said "this game contains components that are no longer present. do you wish to continue loading". I checked my Steam/Steam Apps/Common/Skyrim/Data folders and all the .esp, mesh and textures folders and files were still there. But the game doesn't recognize them.
I redownloaded and reinstalled 4 separate times with the same results, they work fine for a day or two, maybe a week, and then disappear. Supposedly you do not have to subscribe to Nexxus for their mods to work, but I noticed that they stopped working the day after my monthly subscription ended (which is supposed to be for faster downloads only). When I sent a letter to Nexxus tech support telling them I was fed up with fighting with their mods, my mods suddenly started working again, FOR A DAY. Today I turn on Steam, start my game and my Nexxus Mods don't work again.
If Nexxus requires you to pay a subscription fee for their mods to work, that is in direct violation of the rules of the Steam workshop. And if they are not going to abide by the rules of the workshop and not require a membership fee, (Basically you're repaying the original cost of the game twice each year), then their mods should not be allowed in game at all.

Nexus is free, although I hear they are deceptive into making people think they have to pay.

A/ they aren't part of the Steam Workshop, why would they have to abide by its rules? and B/ I and thousands of others have been using Nexus mods with no paid subscription without the problems you describe for months/years.

Did you activate the mods through Nexus Mod Manager, or install them manually? If you did not use NMM, were the mods activated in the Skyrim Data Files (accessed through the Skyrim Launcher from Steam)? There was a problem a while back where *Steam* limited people to 50 mods from the Workshop, I don't know if this also affected people who had manually installed mods and activated them through the Launcher's Data Files section.

No, they're not - they have a page which highlights the paid subscription options, which is pretty commonplace (look at just about any other website which has paid and free options, such as software that has a basic, free version or a fancy, paid one) but if you actually read the page it's clear that there's a free option.

Then why do my mods keep disappearing, why was it after my two monthly subscriptions ended, and why did they mysteriously start working again only briefly after I complained about them disappearing in the first place. I really don't understand how all the files and folders can be there, the game recognizes them one day, but doesn't load them after a short period of time.

No idea, given AFAIK there's no way for them to access your computer and switch on or off your mods, it's much more likely to be a coincidence. As I said, how were you managing the mods?

@gnewna, I have to install them manually, when I try to use NMM it immediately goes to a page that says "sorry, NMM is not available......." and as I said, I check the data files everytime I start the game, because of this problem. the workshop mods I have no problem with, the nexxus mods disappear constantly.

DId you update your Nexus Mod Manager [nmm] ? I've read the newer versions can be glitchy for some, and you just need to re-active the mods.

You do not have to pay for the Nexus - it is purely optional - bypassing the pay plan page at registration requires one extra click and some actual ability to read. Paying at nexus is simply a means for us - the users - to support what is a free site run and filled with content by folks who are also - users - no different from any of us.

I have spent various periods as a paying member and when my subs were done I have not experienced anything like you describe.

This is clearly a case of user error.

Also the workshop bites the big one - modding a Bethesda game requires full control of your data folder - something the workshop completely denies. Paying at nexus is simply a means for us - the users - to support what is a free site run and filled with content by folks who also - users - no different from any of us.

If you are not using Nexus Mod Manager, then it is clearly *Steam*/the Skyrim Launcher's fault if the mods are not loading, or user error, nothing to do with Nexus.

You are definitely getting some weird mod behavior, that's for sure. I don't think it's Nexus doing it though, but I could be wrong. I've only ever been a "free" member, so I don't know how their premium services work. I find it hard to believe that they'd make it more difficult for their paying members, though.

The only thing I can recall from NexusMM is that you have to activate the mods, even though it handles the download part okay, usually. You have to first watch and make sure your download completes successfully. Sometimes it times out, or takes a long time, but once it's completed, then you have to activate them. Other than that, I don't know.

It sounds like you're getting them to work and they're somehow deactivating. It's hard to troubleshoot other peoples' setups and installations. I've had no issues whatsoever with Nexus, and I've never paid them a cent. I've thought about becoming a premium member, but I just haven't made that step yet.

I hope you get it sorted, because without the Nexus, Skyrim would have fallen to the wayside in my Library a long time ago.

@ebonhawk
I agree in principal, I loved the extras in my game I got through nexxus, but the frustration of having them constantly disappear is aggravating. I can't use nexxusMM, for some reason it won't launch when I select the green "download with NMM" button, so there is no way I can use it to "activate" the mod. I've tried "endorsing" the mod on it's download page and I've followed the manual download instructions to the letter on each file I've downloaded. I can see the BluedSteelPlate.esp and the EnhancedDawnbreaker.esp in the data folder, and the meshes and textures folders are all still there. when I load up the game I always check my data link list, when they are working they are all there with checks in the boxes, although there is no "subscribed/Yes" next to them. When they are not working they are simply gone from the list, and it drives me crazy.

When you download the files, if you either download them to the Games\Nexus Mod Manager\Skyrim\Mods folder (if your browser allows you to choose a download location) or drag and drop them there after download, you should be able to find them to activate in the Mods tab when you launch NMM again.

So you're using the default SKyrim Launcher for managing your mods [thus not a Nexus issue].

The "Subscribed/yes" in the "Data Files" tab is ONLY for Workshop mods, since the Workshop cannot setup a mutual connection with the Nexus.

If the "mods" are disappearing from your "Data Files" tab of the Skyrim Launcher, then I would say it is something localized to your computer [perhaps a User permissions issue? Admin vs Regular account].

Hopefully others can chime in here.

I have never used NMM and have never had this problem. From Steam is another issue entirely. For us that are not gullible enough to believe we have to pay it may be fustrating but since they are free it isnt a rippoff.
For those that listen to your friends, STOP.

I never had a problem with NMM, and I never payed a dime for the Nexus membership.
The only thing I can think of is that your load order. Some mods need to be near the top of the load order or they'll just get deactivated.
EbonHawk Jun 13, 2014 @ 12:48pm
Once you set everything up correctly, all you should have to do is launch NMM and click the login button at the bottom left of the NMM window. Then, you go to the Nexus website and login there too. You have to be logged in to both. Then, if you click the "Download with NMM" button on the SkryimNexus, and the server isn't too busy, you should see it start downloading in NMM automatically. Down at the bottom, hover over the Download tab, or expand the view there to see its progress. Once it's done, you activate the mod on the appropriate tab. Some are only in the lefthand tab, others are in both..it's not always easy to figure that part out. But then, with Steam already open and running (but not the game yet!) you click either the Skryim launch button in NMM, or if you're using custom scripts and have SKSE installed (which a TON of mods require), you click the little drop-down arrow beside the Skyrim Launch button and choose launch Skryim through SKSE or something similar. That's it. Everything else takes care of itself, except for a few mods that you have to babysit their load order. ALWAYS read the mod descriptions at the Nexus.

NEVER launch Skryim through Steam. NMM takes care of it for you, or you can launch directly from the SKSE link that should have been created when you installed the SKSE program. That's how I do it anyway. It's rarely complicated, thank goodness.
