Thief Stone: Stealth skills increase 20% faster.
Mage Stone: Magic skills increase 20% faster.
All classes have thier own pros and cons so it helps, at least in the first 10 levels, to train a little in all areas. After I talk to the Grey Beards for the first time I'll start specializing in specific class and focus on quests best suited for that character build. A strictly Mage class is the hardest in the beginning but are very powerful in the long run so I tend to train in the rogue or fighter while working on the perks needed for the mage. I have also spent some time in the characters early stages being a merchant class gaining experience in alchemy, smithing and enchanting while putting the points into a spell class perk.
You're not locked to any class. You can branch into pretty much any skill tree you fancy. Go nuts!
I play an Archer/Ranger/Assassin/Mage/Rogue/Illusionist myself...
