Skyrim crashes on startup, no mods, no add ons
My game has been crashing after the "bethesda" title every single time. I was looking around and saw that this is mainly due to mods but I have never installed an add-on or used a single mod before. Are there other ways to troubleshoot this?

I'm from Poland. I confirm, the problem appeared on December 13th. I did not find a solution.

Take a look at the linked thread, its for FO4 but also includes SSE:

Thank you, all you need is Wi-fi. It works

I disabled my internet and that solved the problem. Apparently it has something to do with the Creation Club. Thanks, Bethesda, you incompetent fools.

So a "vanilla" install?

You could try, Ilja's validating master files:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/535150948617437868/

Then, Compare your files with the files of the Resetting Skyrim to Vanilla part of this thread and check to see if you have files you shouldn't have installed:

Post #1 of the linked "Resetting" thread covers SSE. You'll have to "adapt" Ilja's process for SSE, easy enough to do, or search SSE forum for his valadation process there.

EDIT: found it, ...

EDIT: Your guide is great, would be nice if you could update it at some point. I even post a reference to it on occassion.

Same problem here (Poland) - normal global key without any VPN activations and other wierd combinations.
Game is starting only after disabling internet connection... :steamfacepalm:
Im downloading Fallout 4 with Season Pass (global keys) to check if there will be the same problems there too.

Aye, like we've written in the thread, you can have a more permanent and convenient solution by simply blocking Skyrim in your firewall settings (google if you don't know how). Since I did that, I've been able to run the game without any problems whatsoever -- it's still outrageous that Bethesda has failed like this, however. :/

I can confirm that the solution posted above, disabling the network adapter, has worked for me too. I can also confirm that the problem has manifested itself only since december 2017.
I am running the game from Romania. The game ran normally the last time I played, in november 2017.

FYI, FO4 has players with similar problems...seems to be regional, aka eastern europe like Poland, Romania and the like...some reported that switching off their network card lets them play normally...

I f:steamsalty:cking unplugged my ethernet cable and skyrim started working again.
What the actual f:steamsalty:ck is this sh:steamsalty:t honestly. Bethesda really needs to get their sh:steamsalty:t together.

i think i found a fix for me. my game would randomly crash, although more often when i entered Dragonreach. i disabled all my mods, but game kept crashing. Finally i disabled nvidias geforce-experience "in-game overlays" and "experimental features" and after 2 hrs of gaming my game did not crash (with all my mods enabled). Hope this helps, good luck.

Heeey everyone! It's been years since this first occoured and yet it still does happen! Just puting in my word here for the reason that my case have had some wierd elements. By that I mean it's the time element; it's all the same "eastern europe-disable internet" story but with that wierd twist added to it, that i have just bought the game about a month ago and i have had no problems with it until today! Get my point; if it's something since 2017 december, then I should have had the problem right from the moment I first installed the game. Plus the firewall blockade didn't worked for me either; no matter what rules I have put up, it went crashing if my internet connection was running. I have also did some experimenting and found that you don't have to actually keep your internet offline for the whole time while you play! Once the main menu loads (when the background music starts to play) you are fine to alt+tab to your desktop (before launching skyrim keep something windowed open otherwise alt+tab doesn't work; realy anything can be, even just a folder) and turn on the internet again.

Hey guys. I know this is an old forum and I even forgot about it until Lyrik posted today. There is an actual fix for the problem. It is an SKSE64 (http://skse.silverlock.org/) plugin called SSE Engine Fixes available for Skyrim Special Edition on the Nexus (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17230). Apparently it fixes other stuff too. Use at you own risk as it is based on SKSE64 which as far as I know in in a alpha or beta phase. I personally used it for about a week and have had no problems. Hope this helps.

I just got this problem right now actually and looked through the entire thread and tried all the options. I had uninstalled all mods and reinstalled the game, and it still wasn't working. I also tried turning my internet off and then starting the game but that didn't work either.

I eventually tried to turn my GeForce Experience in-game overlay off. I was about to try loading the game again when I looked at "data files" on the Skyrim startup screen and realized it was still trying to load deleted mods I wasn't even subscribed to anymore. I turned them all off and ran the game to find it finally started working. I did them both before I tried starting my game so I don't know which one fixed it, so I'd recommend both.

I hope this helps someone out.
