Light Armor but not a thief or archer
My Nord PC is primarily a melee type. Main combat skills are Light Armour, 1H weapons & Block (Hvy shield). Bow is secondary for wearing down and harrying opponents. Upgrades I restrict to Health & Stamina,

I chose Light Armour because I imagine it to suit a roaming, dungeon delving explorering adventurer type. Although it seems like the game tries to pidgeon-hole Lt. Armour players as sneak thief dagger wielding archer type. I guess the bonuses that come with that style of play to overcome lack of armour ratings.

The only balancing advantage to my melee character is it can hit and block better due to longer lasting stamina. Is this setup going to work? Should all melee types pick heavy armour? or should I develop as a sneaking archer/thief type?

if your going melee with light armour it would be better with enchantmented armour i think plus its a little more risky, now if your an assasin with a bow light armour (using distance) might be better suited

If you are going to use light armor as a melee, just use the Lord's Stone and keep your light armor defense bonus perks up to date.

If you have the gold, investing in Light armor training can help you reach a higher tier for more bonus perks sooner. Smithing with smithing potions and gear will also help increase your defense.

You can also raise light armor skill by allowing a Skeever to attack you. Just use potions and Restoration to heal yourself.

Light armor warriors are perfectly viable. Might want to actually add in a shield and lord stone though.

This too.

Wind walker and the level 100 perk (forgot name) are way better than heavy armor's fall damage resistance, unarmed damage (except if that's part of your build) and reflect blows.

Reflect blows only reflects the damage which is taken and NOT the damage that is dealt, so if you actually got level 100 heavy armor, chances are that enemies will barely be damaged by it.

IMO, light armor is a little harder at lower levels. But once you reach around 550 armor rating the damage reduction hits it's cap of 80%. With a 100 smithing Steel Plate can hit it. It takes Dragonscale to hit it with light armor.

I have rarely played with heavy armour, I much prefer light for most characters, although I should probably mention I don't usually bother with the higher vanilla difficulty sliders as they're more frustrating and illogical than difficult (I'm the chuffing Dragonborn, and a regular human of the same level as me can take several times as many hits as i can? Meh.) If I want difficulty I'll use mods that add something interesting, or deliberately limit my character in some way. Still, I've had characters that spent more or less the whole playthrough in an increasingly-smithed-up set of vampire armour.

Thanks all. I'll stay light.

I'll probably mod Lydia into a Lt. armored archer. She can carry even more of my burdens.

Well.. barbarians also wore light armor, nothing wrong with being a melee player with light armor, there might have some players who play as archers clad in heavy armor.
