Should I join or destroy the Dark Brotherhood?

I know this is a common question but the thought occurred to me after I followed Astrid's orders and killed one of the captives. I generally try to avoid "evil" decisions in Skyrim or justify my reason in executing them, but after getting the contracts, the targets just seem plain innocent.

Is it even possible to go back now? I already went on the path of joining instead of destroying, so is there any possible way to start the alternate quest? Are there any disadvantages to destroying the Dark Brotherhood other than the horse?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but from what the UESP entry says, you're pretty much stuck. The chance to take down the DB is a fork-in-the-road situation, and that chance is when you first meet Astrid. If you have any saves from before that moment, you'll have to reload one of them. Otherwise, sorry.

If you have a save that goes BEFORE you joined/did the kids quest to kill the hag. Then no you can't go back.

Also, skyrim is a roleplaying game each character is different.
Is your character Hero? Villian? Neutral?
Hero: Destroy
Villian: Join
Neutral: Possible Destroy or leave alone.

(also other factors could be taken into consideration as your play through)

My character's generally hero or neutral. I guess I'll just put off the Dark Brotherhood questline until I feel like it.

I've done both, and when I destroyed the DB, it just shortened the game was all.

well if you destroy the Dark Brotherhood you will have a curs like you have been betten by a vanpier you will have to go to Morforvp and see the wizerd but i have no idear if that still happens i f you want to avord all that dont kill the teacher good luck

Uhh what I think he was trying to say is that if you destroy the DB, there may be a possiblility for you to get bitten by the little girl/ aka the vampire. So then you'll be infected with vamperism, which you would either live with or cure.

WALKaBOUT is trolling you. Babette does not appear in the Dark Brotherhood if you destroy them. Can't have the moral guardians ♥♥♥♥♥ about killing a child, even if she actually is a vampire.

If you want to destroy the DB even after starting to join ... go and have a conversation with the head of the Penitus Oculatus at their Outpost in Dragons Bridge. I have done this quest both ways and found destroying the DB to be boring quest that isn't rewarding in any way apart from an occassional comment from a guard saying thanks.

Whereas the DB quests and the mod to resurrect the DB paint a series of quests that will keep you entertained for quite a long time!

Like anything in Skyrim do what you like and live it!

lots of money (50k potentially )

A free house (dawnguard gives you 1 either way )

Wind shear - a unque sword

A speical bow

it generally a mix match

also you get a absorb HP weapon near end ,which you can get at fisrt by killing astrid
