SOLVED: Random friendly NPCs becoming hostile
I have done the whole forsworn quest in markarth many times, but this has never happened. As soon as I enter the mine all the prisoners start to attack me, unprovoked. I experimented reloading to a previous save, hitting a guard and being sent to prison, same result. I waited a day, did some other quests, came back, same thing. After seemingly hours of research, literally ONE person I had found had this same glitch as me. Apparently, the mod Masters of disguise was causing it. I used this also, and apparently disabling it would work. I took it out my mod loade, but still the same ♥♥♥♥ing result. I can't figure any way of fixing this, does ANYONE have an idea?!? I am kind a desperate right now.

EDIT: To stop random NPC's attacking you, just turn off Ai detection with ' tdetect ' and then click on the NPC and type ' setav aggression 0 '. while detection is off, they should not be able to find you and continue to go about their business. If you need to, try ' resetai '. You can then use tdetect again and you should be able to talk to them as usual.

I followed the modders exact instructions of uninstalling, still no work. But on the MCM menu, masters of disguise is still there, without all the options. I thought there must be some files still in there and looked directly in my skyrim folder. Nothing at all. I even reloaded to an earlier save before I ever entered Markarth, went in and got arrested, STILL COMING AFTER ME. I am really into this game and don't want to have to restart, can anyone at all help?

Usually when this happens (removing a mod due to crashes/bugs), you will need to restart your save/character. It varies based on the bug/mod, as the "trigger" for the bug could have occurred several hours prior in gameplay, and, therefore, won't change back when the mod is removed.

If you do not want to restart, you could always console command every prisoner/hostile person and set them to allied. Not sure of the command for said command (probably something like set.faction xxxx), as I usually screw over something whenever I use the console. Also not sure if that will break the quest further for any reason, as the console is a very fickle beast when it comes to questlines.

Yeah, the scipts are baked into your save, Royal. There's no way to completely remove them. However, if you want to try, you can use a script cleaner to see if that helps. I'll go get the link for you.

Here it is. View the modders tutorial. It's extremely boring but necessary. Can't promise it will work, though.

Other than that, starting over is the only option I can think of. The scripts are in there from the very beginning of the game.

Ok I'll give those two a try. Thanks for th info. I'm really not into restarting after tens of failed attempts to successfully run a game. I always seem to get those 1/100 chance bugs... Worst comes to worst I guess I can't live in Markarth ;_;

Neither of these worked, but I did find a solution; Before I entered the prison, I turned off Ai detection with the 'tdetect' console command, then I went to each prisoner and 'setav aggression 0'. Then I turned tdetect back on, and I was able to talk to them and walk around without them attacking me. This could alsobe useful for any other random npc attack, like the Hadvar problem.

I know this post is old; but thanks for updating with a solution. Had Marcurio go nuts when I entered the Bee and barb and that set him straight right away.

when i played on the original skyrim it happened with vilkas all the time on all of my saves, right now it's happening with uthgerd and i don't have the mods you are talking about

Exactly this issue happened to me and you helped me figure it out. Thanks.

This is basically the only way to fix this issue as far as I could tell. For cidhna mine, all the targets you want have IDs which begin "0001991", to avoid selecting the wrong thing.

This guardion thing worked for me. After that i remembered that i "stole" bandit horse and though usual guards of Whiterun didn't attack me, Jarl Balgruf decided i had to die.

Is there a way to get this to work on NPCs you can't talk to? I'm having this issue with Irileth but I can't reset her aggression level because I can't talk to her.

You don't need to talk to her to reset aggression, in fact you literally can't because they are aggressive. It is done through the console. Open the console, click on Ireleth, then use the setaggression command. It should work the same.

I had a similar problem. Except I already was a stormcloak and had just arrived at a camp after receiving orders from ulfric to go there. I tried some of the above solutions but nothing worked. Luckily, I learned a long time ago that saving as much as possible in Bethesda games especially Skyrim was very wise. So, I went back to a save where the stormcloaks were friendly towards me which wasn't that long ago and continued the civil war questline with no issue.

Also, on a different save. Only the stormcloaks in Morthal's camp attacked me but not the commander. All the other camps were fine. couldn't find out why that happened, or how to fix it.
