This is incorrect. Honey already exists in unmodded vanilla game. However, it is rare and only available from few locations. Installing Hearthfire and Dragonborn DLCs will increase the amount of honey in game, but still from fixed locations.
The best place to aquire honey - with or without DLCs - is the respawning honey pot in Haelga's Bunkhouse, near Haelga's bed.
Really? Well, I must admit I have never seen it. I have Hearthfire installed, but i never noticed it in my homes, and I havent really had any need to look around Helga's place. Well, I admit I am wron gthen. My apologies.
◾Honey can be found by pickpocketing Wulfgar at High Hrothgar.
◾Haelga's Bunkhouse, at the end of Haelga's bed, next to the Shrine of Dibella (respawns).
◾One can be found inside Lakeview Manor,HF in the main hall on a shelf above the fireplace, if the shelf is built.
◾It can also be found in the kitchen wing of a homestead after adding a low table furnishing option. It is located next to the butter churn in a basket.HF
◾One is found in Thirsk Mead Hall.DB
◾One is found in the Greathall of Skaal Village.DB
◾Occasionally dropped by werebears.DB
Wiki and google.
No need to apologize for not knowing something. Skyrim is a wide game an it is very easy to miss things. :)
