Renaming custom items with TES5EDIT?
Is there a tutorial for one? There are a lot of item mods that are poorly named.

"STEEL SWORD 1H!!!"

I'm annoyed with names like these so if its just renaming them it should be easy right? I'm only supposed to edit a text file or maybe use a mod tweaking software such as TES5EDIT? Can anyone teach me how?

I think this mod would be easier, unless you are wanting to start learning how to make mods yourself.

Unfortunately that mod only renames that specific item. If you buy or loot the same item type the new name won't be applied.

I got the same response on my reddit thread when I attempted to rename every items in craft menu for better sorting sadly that mod doesn't do justice on what I want to do.

K, sorry I can't help with the modding tools. I messed up my game installation too many times and gave up!!

You can use the Creation Kit. Tedious though.

Could you tell me more about this? I did google it but for some reason Creation Kit is not in my Games -> Tools section. I don't mind even if the process is tedious.

It's called Skyrim Creation Kit now.

Anyway, open the load folder thing and find the mod in question. Press "Set as Active File", this means that this is the primary subject. Errors will pop up (this is normal as the CK is buggier than my house), just say yes to all.

Since this is an item, head to well, the items section on the Object Widow and click weapons. In the filter, type the item(s) you are looking for and it should appear in the list on the right.

To modify the item name, double click the item and a new window will pop up with the top left going

ID
NAME

ID is the name which the item is using in the Creation Kit.

Name is well, the name you see in game. Just replace the name with whatever you want and press "Ok". Another window should pop up asking you if you want to make a new form; just say no. Then it asks are you sure, just say yes.

When you're done, just press save.

NOTE: Be aware that the CK likes to crash.

EDIT: On the other hand, the CK is a nice place to start if you want to try your hand at modding.

Thanks! It's loud and clear. I'll try it. I shouldn't get CTDs or anything when playing Skyrim if I only touch the name right?

You shouldn't but don't quote me on that.

This is actually MUCH easier in Tes5Edit then the creation kit and also much quicker and without any risk of bad edits carrying in as well.

Open Tes5Edit with just the esp you want to change and everything else unticked (masters will get auto loaded).

Once everything is loaded (it will tell you in the right pane), click on the + next to the mod file, and then the + next to Weapon. Find the weapon name and click on it and it will display the weapon info in the right pane.

In the right pane, right click on the name and hit Edit. If it asks you to confirm if you want to make edits just say yes, type in a new game, close the window, close Tes5edit and save.

Benefits of using Tes5Edit:
- You cant accidentally add in other record edits simply by opening them (the CK will do that every now and again, it's annoying)
- Tes5Edit loads in one minute, not ten, and doesn't display numerous errors
- More direct way to find the weapon as Tes5Edit shows record by mod, rather then just mixing them all together
- When it comes to weapons/armor/stats/statics etc Tes5Edit is actually more powerful because it doesn't block off some of the options that the CK does for no reason

Also worth noting Tes5Edit is a mod creation tool, not just a mod tweaking tool, and lots of mods are made entirely in Tes5Edit and some popular mods are only possible because of Tes5Edit (Immersive Horses being one of them)

And no, changing a name, or stats, won't cause any CTDs, especially if done in Tes5Edit because you have no risk of accidental edits like I said

Thanks both of you I just figured out to do what I needed. Also I'd like to ask if there are any things I should look out for such as max characters for the names? I'm asking in advance to avoid future problems.
Nazenn Oct 28, 2015 @ 6:50pm
Not really. I'm sure there is a max, but its likely on the same interger system that the rest of the records use which is prbably 255. Thats a LOT of characters and is more then both of these sentances!

You really do need to look at the age of a thread.
Do not blow it though, I admit doing the same at least once.
