That's as much a matter of debate as the war honestly. The Imperial capital, what's been chosen as Skyrim's capital by those who rule her is Solitude. Nationalists however (Stormcloaks) would say Windhelm. And before the ocean got mad and swallowed the place, it was Winterhold.

Right now, when Skyrim events take place, the capital is Solitude. It's pointed out on a loading screen and when talking with a carriage driver. Probably a few other places as well, that I now forgot xD

I think only Dawnstar, Markarth, Morthal and Riften never were a place of serious power. Solitude is a capital, Windhelm was the palace of Ysgramor, Whiterun had Olaf One-Eye and Numinex, Winterhold was glorious before the Great Collapse, and Falkreath... well, I don't know about Falkreath, but it's quite an ancient settlement where lots of great wars took place.

Riften is very ancient city, Barenziah herself grew up in Riften. Actually, Markarth was the place where the civil war began and actions of Ulfric in this city marked him as a leader of the rebellion. Morthal is the place where the first vampire was born and Dawnstar had connection with Mythic Dawn sect. And Falkreath...is famous for its cemetery...dunno lol:demoticon:

And I can amaze you! Riverwood is older than USA. First time, Riverwood was stated in first TES game (Arena). Now is 201 forth era, Arena was in 399 third era (so it's more than 235 years), USA independence was signed in 1776, now its 2015 (so it's 229 years). Also notice that USA's story only began, and riverwood was a little town 235 years ago!
Riverwood>USA:demoticon:

How did you know all that, Saruman?
Did you use the Palanthir?

And "offline" status as well...
I played skyrim on xbox 360 really much. And also I played oblivion and morrowind, so I know TES series quite well.

I mean, I played Skyrim quite a lot as well. I don't think playing Oblivion and Morrowind counts much, though, as these places are only mentioned here and there, while in Skyrim you can actually visit them and talk to the people there. While I did know that Markarth was the place where Civil War began (the even known as Markarth Incident) I didn't consider it a serious power. I read several books about Barenziah but forgot the part about Riften. So Movarth was the very first Vampire? Wasn't it Valerica or Harkon? I'm confused. I never liked Vampires, anyway. The only connection between Dawnstar and the Mythic Dawn is that guy who opened a museum.

No... It's not Movarth! First vampire was a nord girl, more likely born in Hjaalmarch.

Guy from Dawnstar had a big family in this city.

I guess I didn't read enough books/listened to enough people...

Movarth is a pretty old vampire too. Markarth is...maybe it didn't had much power, but it will have. City built by Dwemer, place where civil war began, place where reachmen fight with nords. I'm sure Markarth will have a rich history (Don't forget that Markarth isn't much of a Skyrim, and it's not much of a High Rock)
