Fill a bookshelf.
There's a few books you can turn in for "favor quests." Off the top of my head, Last Scabbard of Akrash for the Markarth blacksmith and Night Falls on Sentinel for the Dawnstar blacksmith.

A few books will trigger quests when you read them as well. The Aetherium Wars, Lost Legend, Legend of Red Eagle.

Most unique books needed for quests won't be possible to sell or remove from the inventory before the quest is complete. Other books needed for quests, for example a quest from Ulag at the Arcaneum in the College of Winterhold, but if you don't need to finish these quests as fast as possible, then there's no need to store them. You'll be given a quest marker to a place you're certain to find the needed book in. As for anything else, it's up to you. I personally don't collect general books, I sell Skill Books (because they have a nice 1/70 weight/price ratio), and I collect unique books, such as Notes on Lunar Forge or Treasure Maps

Is it possible to get a bookshelf where i can put all my books or do i need a house of my own (in the game) for that?

You need your own house of course, it's the best and safest way to have storage and to put all the things you collect. I like to build your own house, you can even have a library wing.

Mouse over the books (target the book so that you see the name). If the value of the book is about 50 gold then it's a skill book. Read that book. Ignore all other books unless it's a quest item or unless you just want to read the fiction.

Some books in Skyrim are really fun to read. The Cake and the Diamond, Philogeny of Races, Gentleman's Guide to Whiterun, etc.
People collect cats? In real life you mean? Otherwise it seems kinda racist...

Read them, fill libraries with them, improve skills, and follow the quests in them. They can be stored on library shelves for display of your learning or stored in any container if you run out of bookshelves. Under any circumstances read them to discover if they hold a reward. There is also the option of leaving them where they are with or without reading them.
