arngeir has gone missing

for a time i was getting words of power from him and when he said he was not hearing any more and to come back later, i went to the thives guild and the dark brotherhood for a few quests so i could kill a few days in game and hope that he would give me more words. now that i have gone back to find him again, he is nowhere in the temple. is this normal or is this a glitch or something?

Edit: this brings one other question to mind. why the hell would he stop giving me words when half of my shout list is incomplete?

Not only has Arngeir gone missing for me (can find Borri, etc. and have looked in all the inside and outside places iincluding Throat of the World) but now I'm getting the "letters from a friend" word of power messages via Courirer again instead.
