Good way to level up smithing
Ok so: im rank 11 and managed to get an ebony swoed pretty early. I then decided I wanted to level it up and stuff. So I went through the hassle of mining for ebony ingots. Got a bunch, eager to upgrade my ebony sword.....wait.....I forgot smithing had to be at least 80....

So I was looking fot a few techniques to get it up. Yes yes there are a bunch of youtube videos on it but I was looking for some community answers. Any other advice would be hellful as well :)

Explore Dwemer ruins and pick up all the scrap metal and smelt it all into Dwarven Metal Ingots, then use those ingots to smith Dwarven bows.

Get a pickaxe and mine iron and silver ore deposits, then use the transmute spell to convert it into gold and make jewelry.

Use the Warrior Stone + sleeping bonus before you smith for a 30% XP bonus when smithing.

If you have Dawnguard, do the Lost to the Ages quest to obtain the Aetherial Crown then store the Lovers Stone on it for another 15% XP bonus.

The Riften quest Unfathomable Depths can be started at level 14 and once completed grants you a 15% XP bonus for smithing.

Add all that up you you can have a 60% XP bonus when smithing.

Do all your smithing with those bonuses and your smithing will level up quickly.

Get that spell, buy up or mine all the Iron Ore you can, use that spell until it says you don't have any ore to transmute, smelt it all into Gold Ingots, then turn those gold ingots into jewelry. That'll get you a couple of levels.

To get that spell, go get a mammoth tusk for Ysolda in whiterun.
Find the book in the same cave.

Crafting gold or silver jewelry is very good xp, especially with combination of gems. Also collect hides from dead animals. Apperently leather armour give more xp and cost per 1 point of weight a lot more than iron. And you would need slices of leather for crafting most of weapons and armour anyways.

Leather bracers are a good way to level smithing, but remember that progress is based on the item's value, not the weight.

I make leather bodies, since they give more xp in total and you craft it a lot faster and I'm pretty sure that smithing iron daggers is not effective or faster than iron bodies

I thought it wasn't a good idea to powerlevel things that high (80+ skill level) since it would throw off the balance of the game?

If you've already got a decent money surplus, you can buy supplies from smiths and craft, then sell back. I don't find money to have much value in this game beyond buying the random grand soul gem or magic item, so I burn it on smithing materials when I can. The buying/selling also levels up speech a bit in the process.

If you mean the common advice of boosting non-combat skills too quickly, thus running into level 25 enemies with little to no combat experience, then yes, power leveling can often be a bad idea. But with smithing, it is kind of the exception, since it raises base values of weapons and armor, which is then multiplied by the percent modifiers on other perks. In other words, smithing is kind of a combat ability.

If you mean just making the game too easy, it kind of will. But the XP gains at higher skill levels means you cannot realistically get to 80+ in a skill without reaching level 25+ anyway. And most enemies stop scaling after level 25 except for a few types. Also some types have static levels (giants, etc)

Anyone know of a mod which gives a collection of mining maps? It doesn't have to be an easy one-map-to-rule-them-all, but having several different maps marking roughly the location of ores would be nice to find and have. Like Potion recipes almost.

Try Dawnstar, Shor's Stone, Kynesgrove, Markarth, and bandit camps to find locatable mines. Silver is in Dawnstar and Markarth.

Actually, no.[www.uesp.net] Five Iron daggers will give you a total of 192 xp. One iron armor takes the same amount of materials, but only gives 94.2 xp. It's the same with leather bracers; you get more experience per leather than you do for one leather armor.
