Whenever I launch skyrim it gives me this error: error failed to read install path error = 234.
I click ''ok'' but another 5 of those error pop up i click ok on all of them and the launcher opens up, but then when i try and open the data files the error pops up a few times again and nothing is shown in data files, no mods but when i go in the game some mods are loaded but some aren't and when i click play the error comes up also but when i clear it the game starts, but i can ignore the error its not a problem the only problem is that i cant see anything in data files cause of this i think :(

i'd also like to add that i've tried the fix where i go to regedit and change the install path in case its not good but its good, so that isn't going to solve my problem.

I searched the net for some tips...did you ever have skyrim installed ? it seems to be related to some registry problems which can be caused by a bad mod instalation, or other thing that will mess with your registry (like an illegal copy). I'm not saying anything, just came up in my research. Now it is important, so neither of us will loose their time. You may need to complete uninstall skyrim (even delete the bad registry entries), and then install again.

I'm not the expert on this, but it sounds like something got moved, possibly in the INI files. The fact that the game loads at all means it's mostly correct. One of the Tech gurus will pick up on this I'm sure. But they will need a little more info from you. Things like (IE:) was it working correctly right up until you installed something new? Is this a new installation? did you manually edit any of the INI files? Are the patches installed? ... you get the idea.

Obviously from the error there's an incorrect path statement or %variable% buried somewhere... possibly the INIs, you just have to figure out where.

Bump ...

2 things to check for starters, in the skyrimprefs.ini located in documents\my games\skyrim folder make sure this line looks like this
[Launcher]
bEnableFileSelection=1

Then, same location but the skyrim.ini, make sure these lines look like this.
[Archive]
sResourceArchiveList=Skyrim - Invalidation.bsa, Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Skyrim - Textures.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa, Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa
sResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

If not, then the easiest thing to do is just move those files to your desktop and run the launcher through your Steam library. This will allow the game to create new ini's.

I was checking and changing some things you guys suggested but now i got some kind of new error if this helps, it said: failed to extract plugin file from ckm. i did the .ini stuff but it doesn't help, and no i didn't have skyrim installed before i just installed windows a few days ago, also bought skyrim yesterday :). Its not that much of a problem i mean some mods work even if i don't see them in data files but it would be nice to just disable a mod if i dont want to use it anymore instead of unsubing from it.

And you started the game via SKSE? Don´t get me wrong, I don´t think you are dumb... just error checking.

What version of Windows do you use? Also the workshop is buggy. Varify the integrity of your master following the guide linked below. And last read the pinned topic Player Spreadsheet.

This is a fix from another forum for a messed up workshop mod:

"Alright, I think I found a fix for this issue.

Unsubscribe to the Portal mod and start up the Launcher. Let the Subscribed mods synchronize before closing the launcher once again. Resubscribe, and then start the launcher again. This time, rather than the previous error, you should receive an error about the .esp not being extracted from the downloaded file. This is due to the downloaded being 0mb - there's nothing there to extract! This also explains the "download larger" error, and so on.

Anyways, despite this error, if you go to Data Files, you'll see the Portal 2 Space Core ESP checked off. Highlight that, and choose to delete it and the files associated with it, also accept the option to unsubscribe.

Then, restart your PC.

When you restart, resubscribe to the Portal mod (I started up the Launcher to let the files sync beforehand, just to be safe), and then launch the Skyrim Launcher. Now, rather than receiving an error and maybe a second of "Downloading Portal, etc" you should be given a much longer download time for the Portal mod, and no errors.

This worked for me, and I know it's a little complicated. So, to put it shortly.

1. Unsubscribe and open Skyrim Launcher, let the files Synch
2. Subscribe again, and then open the Launcher. Go to Data Files, click the Portal files, and then choose to Delete it AND Unsubscribe
3. Restart your PC
4. Resubscribe to the mod (Or launch first and let the files synch, to be safe), and then launch Skyrim
5. If it worked, the Portal 2 Space Core mod should give you no error, and take a couple minutes to download. "
