Playing Skyrim on a tablet during commutes with CTD's every 20min. Help?
Hi,

As a father of 4 kids I've found myself not feeling comfortable slashing enemies on the big screen with family around, and when I have the time in the evenings... I can be a bit tired :)

So along came the Dell Venue 8 Pro... a Windows 8 (or 10) tablet that's actually able to run Skyrim on low settings (low low). Combined with an iPega 9023 bluetooth controller it's giving me hours of fun during train commutes playing Xbox 360 controller-style. Having this world in my hands and going on adventures is amazing.

However, Skyrim crashes to the desktop every 10 or 20 minutes or so. It boots up quickly again, but I am trying (to no success) to overcome this.

It's near-vanilla Skyrim. I've just installed SKSE and the memory patch (with only the ini file), and I'm running the latest unofficial patch to fix gamplay bugs and running the low-res texturepack 256 to give me a few more minutes to play due to more free memory.

The tablet has 2GB of ram and is running Windows 10.
For comparison: Fallout 3 runs like a dream. No CTDs, no problems, low/medium settings and no problems.

I'd love to get any advice. I'm thinking it's the 2GB memory + tablet combination issue, but I feel I am pioneering a bit here ;-)

Thanks!

- Martin

PS it's really playable actually. Currently level 8. Here's a screenshot from the opening scene on the tablet http://i.imgur.com/NOM3irn.jpg

I guess you have no mods installed!? Did you verified the files via Steam-Repair tool?

Maybe this could help you!

And how much RAM you can offer? I mean the OS and other background porgamms are eating ram, too. Another question is: What kind of GPU and how much VRAM?

I am still googleing for your problem. I hope when I bump it someone else can solve this issue, too! So you can Level and Loot as long as you can ^^

Hi Maxson, thanks for the tip. I just tried SSME and it applied properly with SKSE installed (as I saw the log file appear), but after giving it a short try again it crashed to the desktop just again.

It has an intel HD400 gfx chip, 2GB Ram, no mods and VRAM set to 728MB. I also tweaked a whole lot of windows10 settings to get the most free memory.

I also read a whole lot of other suggestions about the 2GB RAM maxing out and then Skyrim crashing, but I've checked RAM usage and it's not peaking at all. It's around 1.3GB or 1.4GB when it CTDs.

If you have any more thoughts I'd love to hear them though. Playing Oblivion in the meantime on this tablet... :)

I was confused cuz this is rly old xD... Mhh I will look forward to it later (it´s late here in germany :P). VRAM is not the optimum but enough I guess. The ram mhhhh I mean sure idk how much your OS uses.... Srsly tomorrow xD.

Damn srsly 24/25.11.2015 xDDDD

Try validating your master files.

No need for SSME, it does the same thing as the skse.ini tweak you are already using. The reason I say not to use it is it does the memory tweak with a .dll file, just more resources getting used with an extra redundant process.

You can also try the mod OneTweak, it's dynamic resource priority may help.

Ok I updated all dell drivers with the latest, reinstalled dx9, clean installed skyrim after fully removing all of its folders and preferences. Then after reinstall the launcher didn't boot but that was resolved as windows seemed to have decided to start it in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Then installed skse and onetweak. Ran skyrim once to init the onetweak.ini, saw values populate and left everything on. Set skyrim to fully lowest possible settings, windowed mode with onetweak fixing it to fullscreen.

Restarted skyrim from scratch, played the intro through helgens keep, came out and...

Crash to desktop :(

Ram isnt maxed out and drivers and everything up to date. Aaargh, what could possibly fix this? Thanks for all suggestions so far though. Learned a lot through the proces so far!

Well, no progress then as that still puts you crashing every 10-20 minutes! Next thing I know to try is to check for a background program polling for and taking resources away from Skyrim. This was why I said to use OneTweak, it can fix this issue sometimes. I am not familiar with tablets at all, never owned one, so I am going to go with the standard pc fixes. Check for background programs interfering. AV is the most likely culprit. Other programs will also do this, checking for updates, doing some task.

Deactivate any startup programs. Test, if that does not work can you set your tablet to start in safe mode? This will start your system with only the processes required by the operating system (even aint-virus will not be running), test. If the game works then add programs in one at a time until the culprit.

Good one. Deactivated ALL non-ms services and ALL startup processes although my setup was pretty clean so it were only a few intel gfx bg stuff and google updater. Also followed several skse.ini tweaks from the stability guide.

It did actually make a slight difference because I now was able to do my testrun from scratch all through helgen (my usual test) and to riverwood. But then it CTD'd. :'(

Could still point to a memory issue though. Is there a SKSE entry for logging actual ram and vram usage?

I had a similar problem, then I disabled autosave, now the only problem left is a black screen for 1 sec every 15 min

Unfortunately no, you would need a program like gpu-z. There is also a mod call performance monitor or something, on my phone right now.

You might check the Event Viewer for application crashes, that or enable logging/tracing and then check the Skyrim dump files.
