Will deleting un-used save files make the game run faster?
Skyrim has been running more slowly lately and I was wondering if deleting old files will fix anything.

Yes, though it seems to only be menu lag.

I had over 1000 saves at one point (8000+ in total). Almost all of my menu lag issues completely went away once I moved the saves into an external folder.

So I delete ALL files and make a new save? How risky is it?

Don't do that. Delete all but the last 3 or 4 saves.

Technically, you could delete every save (because the game doesn't constantly write to the most recent save file), but if you crashed right then and there you'd lose everything.

Delete saves only after you make a copy of them somewhere else. If you run into a problem, moving an older save back in can help you save more time restarting a game than going back 10 or 20 hours. The first time you do it you will think "Damn", the 10th time you run into a similar problem, you will say "Whew"

I delete all my autosaves, on each character and delete each character I either hardly use or never use. Speeds up the game like you would not believe.
