You'll find what it's about eventually.

No spoilers.

Yeah, just keep playing the game, talking to NPCs and whatnot, eventually you'll be nudged in the right direction.

ok thanks but can i have a hint please?
gnewna Oct 21, 2015 @ 1:00am
Hint/spoiler (no details of what you'll actually find out, just who to speak to) as to how to find out about it every so often, chat to Hulda in the Bannered Mare about rumours and such. When you're the appropriate level, she'll have a new one, investigate it.

Bigger spoiler but with minimal details as to the type of thing it relates to it's for a - fairly short -Daedric quest

its up to you, you can do it however you want. You just need to get the item. I suggest pickpocketing, to keep him alive.
Your choice to kill or pickpocket Farengar, if you get caught run like hell otherwise the guard(s) will confiscate the key and throw you in jail. The door hides the Ebony Blade, Farengar was looking to test it on... people he knew well to restore its full power, but he and Balgruuf agreed to lock it away.

Bethesda also intended to do a follow up quest after the Blade was acquired, it involves Balgruuf's kids basically being brainwashed by mephala and killing him. They cut it mainly because it DRASTICALLY alters the Jarl status for the Civil War and Season Unending quests in regards to Whiterun and the story itself sounds dark as f**k (his kids commiting Regicide + Patricide would piss off the censorship boards to the point where a Witcher 2 style censored version of Skyrim would have to be made if Bethesda never cut it and SCREW THAT!) plus Arthmoor is still tied on whether he can restore it or not in his Cutting Room Floor mod.
