Anything you craft gives you a base amount of XP. For daggers that means you get more XP than what you would otherwise get. But since that base is low, it only makes sense for the lower skill levels. For higher levels do this:
1) Always collect the hides of creatures you kill, bring them back to town, and craft up a bunch of bracers or leather armors. You don't get a lot of XP, but it adds up over the course of the game. If you wait until you're level 75+ to level up smithing you'll be in for a hell of a grind.
2) XP is based on the value of the item created. Jewelry thus has a huge bang for the effort. Don't sell those gems! Head to Kolskegger Mine and get that gold. Get all the silver. Get the Transmute spell. Then go make the most expensive jewelry you can.
3) If you perk up the heavy armor side of the tree, Dwemer gear can get you a lot of XP quick. I usually go for Dwarven Bows. Head into Nchuan-Zel or other Dwemer ruins and collect all the stuff you can smelt down into ingots.
Dwarven bows need 2 dwarven ingots and 1 iron ingot, both of which are plentiful. You can get dwarven ingots at Dwarven ruins, and by smelting dwemer scrap.
If you have any fortify smithing gear or potions, use them to improve your gear for more xp Having the appropriate perk increases how much you can improve it and thus give more xp.
Geek Alert:
ΔXP = 3 × item value0.65 + 25. An iron dagger (10 gold) yields 38.4 XP per ore chunk, whereas 2 gold rings (150 gold total) yield 51.5 XP per ore chunk—34% more efficient Smithing XP gain, along with Alteration XP from the transmuting.

Not kidding either and no mods to help me.
