Failed to Initialize Renderer (SOLVED)
I updated my Nvidia drivers to version 358.50 yesterday, but this only started happening after several launches. Every time I do a complete shutdown and boot or restart of my computer, the Skyrim launcher and launching through SKSE work fine. Every second and subsequent time I launch the game through either of those, I get a "Failed to initialize renderer" error. There is no "Your display doesn't support the selected resolution" or "Unknown error" after it, just "Failed to initialize renderer". The only way to play the game is to reboot my computer evey time I exit the game. I've done a complete uninstall (deleting local files through steam and manually deleting the steamapps/common/skyrim file as well as my documents/mygames/skyrim file) and reinstall and I still get the same problem.

If it helps, the first time I launch the launcher, I can go into the Options menu and change everything just fine, but the next time after playing and every time after that, I cannot change my Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering options to anything other than "Off (best performance)". The other settings (x2, x4, etc.) do not appear in the dropdown menu.

Any help at all would be appreciated! It's not a game-breaking problem, but I'd really rather not have to restart my computer every time I want to play.

I deleted clientregistry.blob and followed the instructions, but im still getting the error. This time I got the error on the first launch, though.

Driver issues, then. Not familiar with Win 10 but video drivers have been an issue. Use the Nvidia site's "clean uninstall" of your GPU driver and graphic control panel. Reinstall last known good drivers. Reboot.

That fixed it! Thanks very much.

Could you edit your original post to include (Solved) so that others may find it easier as a possible solution to their similar issue?

I have AMD, how could I fix this issue? I have the AMD RX 400 and it was working with Skyrim, I quit out of Skyrim and the next day it stopped working. Quite annoying as it is my favourite game. I will keep looking and edit or delete this is I get it working.

Propably a similar issue. Windows 10 is fond of tossing proper 3. party drivers out, and insist on using standard windows drivers. Try reinstalling your AMD drivers.

Another solution for those that don't won't to re-install video cards. 2 steps.

1 go into your PC settings find your monitors display size (width and height) right click the Skyrim game in your steam library, click properties -> General -> Set Launch Options. Type in the following "-w (the width of your monitor) -h (the height of your monitor)" press OK (make sure to include the spaces).

2 still in Skyrim properties go to "Local Files" click "Browse Local Files". Once in the folder right click the "SkyrimLauncher" -> Properties -> Compatibility. If you've upgraded windows version and was able to play Skyrim on a previous version you can select (under compatibility mode) the Windows version it worked on and tick the box. Then under neath that in Settings tick the box "Disable Full Screen Optimisations"

Once done it should work. Worked for me.

if you have done all of this and its still not working, check your skyrim folder in steam if it has d3d11.dll if not go to C:\Windows\System32 and search for dxgi.dll copy that paste it on your desktop then rename it to d3d11.dll then move that to the skyrim folder in steam. this worked for me and if this still doesn't work then i don't know what to say... i've tried everything except this.

I very very rarely post on here at all but you deserve a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ medal my friend. After many years of not using my PC I decided to fire her up again and for 2 weeks now I have been welcomed to this message... Borderline sold my PC because of this reason, no games were working at all, Skyrim now works spot on, so I will be trying it with other games also.

Hero.

Hero.

Running Skyrim through SKSE and wanted to note that from this, I went to check my display settings (laptop) and when launching Skyrim Anniversary Edition (not sure if this makes a difference so including it) through SKSE, it brought up the initial (play, options, etc) and I went into options and just changed the resolution to 1920x1080 (my display per settings for my laptop) and it loaded fine. I thank the person that put this up, I truly appreciate it and it helped me immensely.
