You couldm always make sure u have a pick with you and Mine the ore, or when you kill wolves bears n such use a tanning rack and get your leather strips that way,

Its expensive to buy the items and they may not always have what you need. Then, crafting what you want will be dependant on what your current skill level is at. If you want to craft an Elven sword, but you're not even level 20, you won't be able to. Elven skill is above that. It is better to explore and find some ore, smelt it and go find some more you may not find it such a bore when you read a book of lore. Find some in a mine, then take a rest and have some wine then go craft some new design provided that you find the time. "Go hurt something!" - quote from Oblivion.

Get your self one Pickaxe, one bow, and one Axe and you fix it yourself.
Why buy all that?

Kill wolves. goats, bears, deer, make leather, profit

Mine or buy iron ore (cheap) and use Transmute spell to turn into gold (in vanilla game, not a mod). You can find the spell tome north of Whiterun somewhere or other. Which frankly makes gold mines (theres a big one in the Reach guarded by Forsworn and deposits here and there) pointless honestly.

You need a woodcutter's axe then look for tree stumps in towns and such places with firewood next to them and then press E while looking at the stump

I think every town has them, most camps, scattered throughout the land, and around mines a lot of times. It's the axe that's the kicker. I usually give it up for space, then I need the dang thing for something.... Oh, that's right!! I gave it to Sofia to hold. No, I left it back in my other pants at my home. Shoot.. :-(

Why do I keep forgetting that Transmute spell?!?!?! I don't know how many times I've been needing some gold or silver to smith something pretty, and thought, "Well, crap, I don't have anything but iron in my shorts. (Oh, wait that sounded a little dirty!)" I keep forgetting I can transmute the stuff. Is there a limit on it? Can I transmute say iron into silver, then transmute that into gold? Seems sorta like cheating really, since I am regularly carrying around several dozen iron ingots and ore.

By default (i.e. without a mod) Transmutewill turn one piece of silver ore at a time into gold ore, then when you have no silver ore left it will turn one piece of iron ore into silver ore, then turn that piece into gold ore and then alternate iron>silver and silver>gold until you have no more silver or iron ore left.

(So if, as is likely, you start off with only iron ore it'll go i>s, s>g repeatedly.)

There are mods which will turn all iron to silver (still one piece at a time) and THEN start turning silver to gold, which is handy if you want to end up with some silver and some gold, as otherwise you have to keep stopping to drop bits of silver ore until you have enough, and then go back to alternating.
