Follower (Lydia) cowering

I just got to the part of the story where you get Lydia as a follower. I thought I could use her as a kind of tank for my archer character but every fight so far starts and she screams stuff like "I cannot best you" and "I surrender" and just runs away to hide behind cover. Is this normal and is there some kind of mechanic involved to make her fight?
or should I just make use of console commands?

It's kinda sad to see her run away from easy enemies I can kill in 1 or 2 shots

Sounds like a bug. Each actors (NPCs) have a semi-hidden stat called Confidence or something like that. It's exactly what it says on the tin. That stat has five tiers I believe? Anyway, Lydia like other Huskarls are set to Foolhardy, that means they will never retreat unless they're hit by a fear spell.

give her better gear,,,,she won't run then. A good hammer does wonders too.

I have to keep eyes on her to prevent she kill herself by too brave!

I've never see Lydia run away like a coward,she will protect me with her life.

This has happened to me on several ocassions to Hadvar and Ralof. the only thing i can find is a bunny. i kill it and everything is fine. this does not inspire great confidence in either side defeating the Thalmor

Agree, Lydia is foolhardy and can get you into all sorts of dangerous situations. The only time Lydia cowers or shouts "I cannot best you...etc" is when her health is really low. Check her out with the cursor, it should show her health bar. Try zapping her with a ' heal other' spell if low.

yes exactly, she only has basic steel armor you can smith her better armor and wepons and upgrade it to flawless if your smith is high enough, when i first gor her my smith wasnt quite high enough and he was say the same , if we went up again tougher mobs, so i had virually keep her alive and myself, then back at whiterun, I went to work on smight better gear for her...
