How to fix the inventory lag?
I made the mistake of autolooting too much, and now it takes five seconds to open the inventory and even to drop items.

So I'm trying to figure out what to get rid of first to make it a bit more bearable.

Does anyone happen to know what causes most inventory lag? Large stacks of identical items? Enchanted items? Items with detailed textures, such as armors? ...something else?

How many stuff do you have there? You cant carry to many things.

I guess drop single items and small stacks first. At least that way you won't stutter as much when you come to the items which bring up the "how many?" prompt.

Only in vanilla. I got tired of juggling ingredients and such, so I added some weightless items mods. Should've known that it'd have side effects. Especially after I got into habit of looting everything that isn't nailed down.

Thanks, I'll try that.
I attempted to prune down the largest stacks first, but that didn't seem to have much effect. So maybe it's the number of different items that matters more.

Ok. That explains stuff, I was afraid that you have some mod or used the console.
Try Bomb Bloke:s suggestion.

And yes the numbers matters. Dont forget that the more stuff you carry around the more do your PC have to work when you open up anything.
Others can perhaps explain better.

The numbers matter in that having lots of stacks is bad. They don't matter in regards to how large those stacks are.

In my misc section I've got a stack of items which adds up to somewhere over half a million units. It doesn't cause any problems.

I don't know whether it's true of Skyrim, but in Oblivion, modded items tended to take longer to load than vanilla ones. This is because they tended to use more memory - the amount of items you could put into a container before it bugged out and started hiding things depended on the complexity of those items.

Fortunately you could always get your stuff back by simply pulling stuff out until the items you wanted became visible again. In Skyrim, stuff doesn't get hidden; it just slows the heck down.

For what it's worth, I use this mod:

Even if you fill it up to the point where the game slows down when you open it (which I've done on more than one occasion), at least your regular inventory's unaffected.

My guess is that a vast assortment of different items cause inventory loading lag.

I use two different Bags of Holding to keep my storage loading quickly.

Bag of Holding: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8066/?
Vidani's Bag of Holding: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9085/?

I use Vidani's Bag for Enchanted items, equipment I plan to Smith later, and equipment I plan to store in my home later.

Items I plan to sell for quick cash I store in the other Bag of Holding along with mined ore, jewels and other assorted items. If l start to notice slow down I will sell the items I don't need.

I store Alchemy Ingredients and food items on my Horse using the mod Convenient Horses and store excess potions on my follower.

That makes it easier to manage items and avoid inventory lag.

Thanks for the tips.
I've started using the Deep Storage spell from Apocalypse spell mod, but I think I'll download the bag too. Will be useful for sorting.

I'd recommend trying manual removal before console commands, but if need be, you can use a removeallitems command to get things out of your inventory.

SAVE FIRST !

What you do is go to a safe container. (Probably best if it's an empty one, for ease of checking results) Open console with ~ and click on the container. You should see an ID number appear below the crosshairs. Let's say it's ABC123. Type...

player.removeallitems ABC123

*It won't be ABC123, but it will vary dependong on the container you select.

You should hear an inventory sound and see some text pass in console. Close out of console and check to see if all your items are in the container correctly, before continuing on. If not, quit and start again with the save.

I would only use this if I was lagging to the point that I couldn't get rid of the stuff manually. Console commands can be risky.
