Soul trap
I been having confusion with this issue.. I bought the best soul gem.. the one which is 0.5 weight and costs 1300+

I put on my nord war axe and for 3 second kill duration.

It only works for animals.. but for humans or orcs or elves or whatever.. it says gem not large enough or not enough soul.. or either says "**** resisted soul trap".

Does this have anything to do with increasing my conjuration level skill?

Or does it have to do with magicka points?
because so far it is 100/100 i haven't upgraded it once, i mainly focus on stamina and health since my main character focus is battle.

Black soul gems and the Black Star are the only soul gems that hold the grand soul of a humanoid. Grand soul gems will not do it. I would do the Quest to obtain the black star if thats what you want to do, becasue then you wont have to worry about always looking for a black soul gem. you can just keep refilling the black star. but i cant recall the name of that quest atm.

NPC souls can only be trapped in a Black Soul Gem, or the Black Star, which is one of the possible rewards from Azura's quest, started at the shrine outside Winterhold.

You need a Black soul gem if you want to trap human/orc/elf souls. The regular soul gems can only capture white souls.

So yeah, go visit the shrine of Azura and talk to Area Lenith there. Then just follow the quest line from there. That will get you the Black Star.

Thanks a lot folks.
Just a minor detail.. i have to keep refilling the weapon with a new black star everytime? or the magic in the weapon is unlimited capacity?

Weapons and Staffs have limited charges. Clothing, armor and jewelry have unlimited charge.

EDIT: Wearing apparel with enchantments that reduce the cost of casting spells, will reduce the "charge cost" of enchanted items as well. So if you have a ring, necklace, armor and/or helmet/circlet with Fortify Destruction on it, it will let you get more uses out of a weapon with a destruction type enchantment, such as shock damage. If your gear adds up to -100% magicka cost, you can have unlimited charges on the weapon.

If you want to increase enchanting then having a weapon with an enchantment of soul trap for 1-3 seconds will let you absorb that soul into a soul gem of the next available size that you have available. So if you only have grand soul gems and kill a skeever the skeever soul will put a petty soul into your grand soul gem.
Then open your inventory and look at your weapons you will notice that Z get highlighted when you pause over a weapon that has had a charge used ... using the Z key brings up a selection of soul gems you have available ( if you do?) you can scroll down that list and with each it will show how much it will recharge your weapon. The more times you use a soul gem to recharge your weapons the more you enchanting skill goes up.
Details on anything you wanted to know about skyrim can be found at UESP.

When you recharge a weapon with the black star, it's the same as using a regular gem, only you keep the now-empty star. You'll need to fill it with a new soul before you can recharge the weapon again.

Ah ic.. that explains everything.. much obliged for the info everyone =)

If you wish to mange how soul gems work then you may be interested about this mod.

Acquisitive Soul Gems Multithreaded by eyeonus
Changes how soul gems work. Souls should now only use gems of their own level. For example, a petty soul can no longer enter in to grand soul gem, as they previously could.

A good Necromancer though will be well stocked with soul gems of all sizes, removing any need for the above named mod.

I'm not really aiming for magic.. i just thought soul trapping makes me stronger every kill i trap.. but apparently i don't seem to find any advantage in soul trapping although i trapped countless animal souls as of yet

Soul gems are used to enchant weapons/armour, or to recharge magical staves and enchanted weapons. If you are not interested in enchanting/magic you'll find little use for them. If you change your mind, a great weapon to fill soul gems is the Bound Bow with the Soul Stealer perk, which automatically casts Soul Trap on targets.

It's so easy to find soul gems that I find the Black Star of limited use (I've only used it once.) Sure it never breaks but unless you keep a soul trap weapon on you at all times it's a pain to keep refilling it. So you have to use five soul gems to get a full charge...they're everywhere anyway!
