Mostly the Forsworn are violent and they will attack. At one camp they are friendly. That have something to do with Madanach in the Cidnha Mine. At one camp Druadach Redoubt were Madanach lives, they're friendly.
are they evil?

Only if you consider bigotry evil. Though they do hang out with hagravens, who are not nice chicks.

Like a lot of things in Skyrim, there are no easy answers.

On one hand, the forsworn are horrible bandits who murder people indiscriminately, and have no shame in that. They also consort with Hagravens who are mostly nasty people/creatures.

On the other hand, they are the actual natives of the markarth province, and they were thrown out of there unjustly. And when they stole it back while everyone was distracted with the Great Thalmor War, they apparently ruled it fairly. And then Ulfric Stormcloak came back from the war and was like "Yeah, you seem to have native barbarians who have hijacked your city. How abotu I murder every last one of them and take your city back for ya?"

So...They're unfairly displaced natives whose lives and traditions have been stomped all over. But their response was to become incredibly nasty and dangerous bandits who kill innocents for no reason. I mean, have you forgotten the violent and pointless murder that happened the second you entered Markarth?

Also, even if you side with the forsworn in the prison, it will only make THAT particular group of forsworn friendly to you. The rest still try to kill you on sight.

Their cause might have been just but they are violent and very dangerous. Their use of witchcraft and being allied to the Hagravens makes them pretty nasty. I'd say a moral character would probably elect not to help them.

There was a point in the narrative where I sympathized with them but well, they always attack on sight so...
I was also led to believe that you could side with them, but that would be too many quest branches for Bethesda to handle.

Nah, if you kill the big lollygaggin' orc at the door (or bribe your way past him), you can go in and kill Madanach, and get his key to the exit.

I did that last time. You absolutely do not need to side with the Forsworn to get out.

Before the dragonborn even chooses his or her path in life, the forsworn will attack you on sight. When you wander their camps and redoubts, they are awash in human remains.

The forsworn are mostly evil.

So are the people of Markath.

Choose your poison.
