Dragonborn DLC: March of the Dead side quest bug/glitch

Hi everyone,
I'm currently playing through the Dragonborn DLC and I'm getting to the fight against General Carius in the March of the Dead. When I enter the room to fight the general Skyrim crashes and sends me to the desktop immediately. This namely happens shooting into the room or shooting the first ash spawn with a Daedric Bow. I've tried reloading a previous save file to see if that changes things but it doesn't fix anything.
My searches online only tell me of the bug with the start of the quest and the bug of the key being missing but nothing on my problem. I can't be the only one with this issue?

Do you get the same issue with other ash spawns (eg ones you summon yourself)?

Do you get the same issue with other weapons, or when using spells?

Are you using mods? If so, which? If not, I strongly suggest installing SKSE and the unofficial game patches.
