If your vanilla followers are routinely getting clobbered, there are skill level uncappers on nexusmods, or get a custom follower, many of whom are devastating in combat.
NFF may be exactly what I was looking for. Not overly complex and not too game changing as I like to keep my mod list ultra slim (running just 32 mods tbh). In fact, it looks simple enough for just installing it mid-game to check a companion's stats occasionally and remove it afterwards. Superb!
I mostly prefer the trio Illia, Aela and Ingjard as they suit my playstyle best, plus the latter has no level cap if one can trust the numerous online sources. 'Bijin Warmaidens' is pretty much the only follower overhaul I've been using and there have been no issues with it. Only thing I found weird is when I enter a location with them such as inns, random npcs would turn hostile and attack them for no reason, or when encoutering bandit chiefs who sometimes one-shot my follower who should actually be able to tank a good load of damage. A tool like NFF will certainly come in handy when keeping track of my followers' progress.
