can housecarls be trusted with loot?
(i´m still quite new to the game)

so basically, the enemies are usually easy enough to get rid of, but especially in larger dungeons i often come to a point where i get encumbered with loot, now: i´m already a thane in whiterun and close to being it in 2 other cities, meaning i have a housecarl whom i can take with me through dungeons and such.

point being that there is a trading option with her, but can i make her carry things for me without having to fear it disappearing, like it would in chests outside my house? and if so, what´s the limit at which she would be slowed down as well?

lastly, if i trade her some better armor could i get her to wear it?

Yes, your follower won't steal your stuff, but they might use your healing potions. If you give them armor that is better that they own, they will wear it. Just make sure of the armor type. Some followers use light armor and others heavy.
They also use staffs, if you give them two they go guns akimbo with them.

That's one way to put it - lol. I was amazed the first time Lydia pulled out a pair of fire staffs. Thanks for reminding me :)

I have given Serana several staves, but she won't use any of them.

Hah, Serana is useless, Try giving her a top notch bow. As soon as it's time for a battle she goes right back to using her weak magic. The fact that she isn't ugly makes it just about bearable to have her forced on me for the duration. I usually get her to cure herself of Vampirism and then abandon her - hoping she'll die. LOL - I don't like the imposition of her at all :D

I don't like followers at all, but she is kind of forced upon you for the quests.

I'm with you on that, who needs a housecarl with 15 sneak charging into the fray when you're trying to be sneaky. I take them along to "carry my burden" during the larger ruins. They wait outside long enough - heh heh

Edit: actually, I didn't mind Inigo - he made me chuckle a lot "why do you always run everywhere?" or "we are getting fit!" Might use him again depending on character choice.

Followers are fun when you send them to fight a troll or a giant just watch them get smashed they make god distractions too when you want to get somewhere without everyone looking at you.

the bow is a vanilla glitch, but you can give her better weapons

A better bow should work, but there is a glitch where followers will use their basic vanilla bow on occasion. You can give her a better melee weapon, but note that not all enchantments work for followers. But soultrap does if you give them enough empty soulgems.

If you pop into the CK and make follower bows "playable" there is no longer a problem with followers defaulting to their er... default bow.

One of the follower tweaks mods takes care of the vanilla bow glitch as its first thing. Just can't remember the name of it at the moment. :-(

True enough, but I prefer to have my own patch instead of a list of .esp's as long as your arm - and I only remedy that which really annoys me. My PC is dying too - memory failure like me :D
