the 7000 steps
Has anyone actually counted the steps?
I lost count at 520 something.

I don't remember the exact number but I'm pretty sure someone counted and said they were less than 7000. Pretty sure they weren't counted lorewise either and someone just decided they were gonna be called that because it sounded epic.

At one time there might of been 7k, but since the nords are incapable of even the slightest upkeep to their structures there are now many less.

Or maybe they just can't count.

748 ... to be fair 7000 would take an eternity to walk up!

I counted them for that poor, lonely Khajit from Interesting NPCs ... really shouldn't have told him the truth though! :meatytears:

I can't count higher than seventyorange. Preacher said counting is the devil's work. It is an evil temptation of evil that turns you evil. Preys da Loarduh!

Chesko made a mod detailing a bit of obscure lore about the 418th step[www.nexusmods.com]. It is worth a look just for the reading but it is pretty cool otherwise, too.

From a sticky post in his mod:

There are 7,000 steps. What you are misunderstanding is Bethesda's definition of a "step". What you are calling a "step" is every "stair" on the path (each time you have to pick your foot up in order to go higher). You're right, there's only around 700.

Bethesda's definition of a step is every stone along the path. If you take every step asset on the mountain (which, conveniently, the name of each static object has the number of steps in the name), you should be able to sum it up and arrive at 7,000. This is the 418th such "step", depending on which way you are counting (left to right, or right to left).

i dont think there is 7000 on the way up yet there are areas with no steps where there could of been some in the past we may never know

7000 steps or 7000 feet high? not sure how the game scales but perhaps the mountain is 7000 units high to whatever measurement used in the game.

Nords must have some pretty hefty drinking problems if they need a 7000 step program.

There's a quest in Interesting NPCs with this same question...

There are 7000 steps people. Don't shatter my paradigm! I am a Warrior in shining armour and there ARE 7000 steps and I have walked up them. Bow before me plebieans... At once!

I counted 728 steps. There is a margin of error because there are many rocks that could be called steps. I did not count those because they are just rocks in the trail.

If you're talking about the small side-quest of that fellow he's asking you to count them, they are 748 (or so, that's the correct answer).
