One could argue that Hircine is rather more to blame for the girl than Sinding is (he couldn't stay away from humanity forever - that was why he stole the ring in the first place, so I view that incident as Hircine's sick joke). The hunters are a moot point if you know that they're dead either way.

It's no good trying to pick the "right" side in Skyrim; on average, they're all evil.

I can tell you that you won't get that sword while he's alive, though. I didn't, he's still living and I can't find it (even after leaving the area for... I dunno how long, but many dozens of levels, maybe an in-game year?).

Not that I mind, the ring is far more valuable than it and the Hide combined.

It is best to get Bolar's Oathblade before triggering that quest. If you don't get it and trigger the quest you have to wait a game month for the cell to reset before the cave reverts.

I usally get that sword first thing. It is incredibly useful for a low level player as it makes some higher level enemies run away.

Before I started using USLEEP, I would spare Sinding, let him kill all the hunters and then kill him for both rewards, but USLEEP patched that. It is still possible with the USKP though.

I think I would rather have the armor then the ring because of the Magic Resist and since I use the mod Werewolf Mastery, I don't need additional transformations when I can transform several times each game day.

Truth be told, Aela will give you one single extra chance to turn again if you want it. Beyond that there's also mods, of course. Most of the werewolf overhauls deal with that particular problem as a matter of course.

Do you use the unofficial patch?

Sorry, I sometimes forget that's not a given. Yes, I do, though I admit I haven't updated it for quite a while.

That said, the other week some guy posted that he had it, and even a month after killing Sinding the sword wasn't there. Digging into the UESP talk pages I found even Xbox users complaining of the same thing, so it all sounds a bit random - the only sure way to get it is to either collect it before this quest starts, or to just spawn it in.

You have to wait a game month before the cave will revert back to its previous state. If you enter the area to check before the cell has a chance to reset, the timer resets and you have to wait another month, unless you saved your game before re-entering the cell.

If that doesn't work

"If you chose to save Sinding, the grotto can be reverted to its non-quest form by opening the console and entering the codes prid 95586 and disable."

My point of view is that Bethesda gives us immediate access to console commands within their games because they know full well we'll need it to apply our own bug fixes as we play. The fact that it can be used as a cheat system doesn't make it one.

Ask yourself - should you have the sword, having entered the grotto? If you believe so, then by all means take it, via whatever means!

This sounds like the way to go. Assuming that ID's for Sinding, you could presumably bring him back later, too.

You can do both, you know. Have the ring and the armor. And the oathblade as well.

That code is not for Sinding, from my understanding it is for the altered version of the Grotto. It disables that version of the Grotto and reverts it back to its original state.

If you plan to use that code. Make sure you complete the quest first.

Once you get your reward, exit the area, use the code, re-enter the grotto and go get the sword. You may not have to leave the area, but I have never attempted using it, so it just seems safer to me.

After you retrieve the sword exit the zone and re enable the area using the code, although it may not be necessary. Just type enable in console with the same prid active.
