Revive Arivanya
Okay, so I tried to start Blood on the Ice today...only to realize that Arivanya is dead -and has been for more than 10 hours of gameplay (stupid vampires, and I thought event-critical NPCs were immortal), meaning that
1) I can't start the quest
2) I can't buy the house in Winterhold
3) I don't want to load back to where she was last alive

I tried using console commands to no avail (player.placeatme 0001B144 resulted in an error, moveto 0001B144 sent me to the body cleanup. I tried "resurrect 1" there and while it would work on some other NPCs it wouldn't work on her)

Is there anything I can do to bring her back (without havign to redo 10+ hours of exploring, dragon fighting, leveling and enchanting)?

Ressurect is more of a developer command for testing. It doesn't do what one would assume. Recycleactor is what you are looking for.

not sure that works either ... because she's dead for the game. that's the reason I have a mod that sets most named npcs protected.

It's Susana the Wicked's murder (not Arivanya's) starts the Blood on Ice quest. It's only when you choose to arrest Wulunferth (who you should talk to catch the true culprit) by going straight to the jarl's steward that the quest might break.

This is one of the reasons people keep saying to use the unofficial patches... for one thing, they mark her as essential to prevent exactly this from happening. Beats me how you'd expect to get through this, one of the buggiest quests in the game, without them installed.

Personally I use No More Redshirts as an additional layer of protection (if only because I don't like ANY NPCs dying without my permission, important or otherwise):

I'm not sure this can be fixed without reloading your old save. Even if you correctly resurrect her, the script which broke the quest on her death has already been executed. But if you really want to try it:

prid 0001B144
enable
moveto player
resurrect 1

Assuming that doesn't help at all, what's the output of this command?:

getstage MS11

That initial murder will never happen if some of the NPCs required later in the quest die early. Arivanya is one of these.

that first set of commands worked.
She was stuck on her back a first, but once I left the city and came back she was up and walking around her usual annoying self.

Thanks

well...she's alive.. but I still can't get the dang quest to start.

Is there another NPC I should look for in the hall of death?

NO once dead always dead in the eyes of the game.

are you using the unofficial patches? if not pick the master lock on Hjerim

although the bugs section mentions things that may help otherwise.

That's what recycleactor is for - as i said ressurect is the wrong command for this kind of thing. You probably also have to reset the quest through the console.

Tova Shatter-Shield seems to be the other. Viola apparently was one, but got fixed with a later official patch, so she shouldn't be an issue.

Surprisingly, UESP seems to reckon that resurrection should actually work in this case (and by "work" I mean "unbreak the quest" - it was already a given that you could get Arivanya mobile again), though you'll still have to spend a day or so away from Windhelm once they're back on their feet before things start moving.

You also need to visit Windhelm a certain number of times in total (moving away at least as far as Brandy-Mug Farm each time before returning), and you must enter through the main or dock gate (or fast travel) between 7pm / 7am.

That command doesn't do exactly what you think it does. If a script has been executed in regards to a certain NPC, recycleactor won't have any affect on the matter.

Truth be told, when reviving NPCs you generally want the original back on their feet - not a new or recycled version. This is the purpose of the 1 in the "resurrect 1" command.

It started working.

Guess I just had to let her live for a few days before the entry-count log for the quest started.
