Nexus Mods: "Image file too large"

I know this could possibly be the wrong forum to ask this question, but...

How do you upload your costum steam avatar to the Nexus Profile Pictures? Because when I tried to do that on my current steam avatar, Nexus complained the file was too large.

Yet I KNOW it is possible (somewhere) because I've seen someone with a picture of their Skyrim character as their Nexus avatar.

Actually your image seems small enough as is, no idea what the problem is. Maybe it is the dimensions of the pic.

Well, when I uploaded my image in Paint, the file size was 542.5KB.

Is there a way to reduce it? or could it actually be the dimensions?
