The Pursuit Thieves Guild quest glitched
So, i've played the game a few times now but i've never actually completed the nightingale questline. I made a new character again and ever since i've been grinding. Unfortunately for me there's a slight problem.
Now i was aware of Chillrend being in Riften (youtube videos) and i broke into the manor and took Chillrend and Mercer Plans and Bust of the Gray Fox simply because it looked like stuff i could sell to Delvin.
Turns out that this will trigger a glitch because you're meant to go here at some point in the questline, and when i completed the quest on the Markarth rubbings and stuff, the new quest didn't start.
Karliah is at the end of the nordic chamber place where you get paralysed, and all she says if you try and talk to her is "hmm".
I have tried setting the progress of the stage in console with player.setstage tg07 10, but nothing shows up in my journal.
Can anyone help?

(by the way, i sold the bust of the gray fox to delvin, put the mercer plans in a chest in my house, and chillrend is still in my inventory)

No reason to bump. We just can't reply to every post at the very instant. :)

Here is the case. All the bugs that can be fixed related to that case are done in Unofficial Skyrim Patch. If you already have that, or the recommended Legendary version as merged mod, then only way to deal with this is to load a save prior of entering the house in the first place. Setting stages do not deal with quest triggers and this house is one of them.

If you have all DLCs, then install USLEEP. If you don't have all DLCs, then install older separate patch(es). It does fix the problem with Karliah.

If this does not help, then see more suggestions from UESPWiki page, under "Bugs" section. If everything else fails, then you will likely have to load a previous save.

so basically, get the unofficial skyrim patch (as i only have hearthfire) and hope for the best
if all else fails, load a previous save or just cry.

This forum has a group of regulars, trying to reply to help requests, when ever we can. I have a free weekend, so I may just as well write replies here.

Take a look of our pinned topic Player spreadsheet - Player and Modding Resources. You notice that we do a lot of writing here and I am not the only one doing it. :)

There is also a patch for HearthFire as well. You can find the link from USKP download page.

You can try setting other quest stages that were presented in UESPWiki page. USKP shold fix the problem with Karliah and setting proper stages may fix the other problem for you, but I honestly can not promise they will - entering in to that house prior of the quest is known to bug out Thieves Guild questline badly.

welp, i've tried everything on uesp, and it seems to just boil down to reload a save
i don't really want to contemplate reloading as i have done SO MUCH since i took chillrend or when i had almost finished hard answers.
i guess i'm just gonna ignore this and idk look up the quest rewards for the nightingale stuff and just add it in through console. thank you SO much for your help though, you have been very helpful :D
(enchant a peice of armour through console to reduce time between shouts by 100% and just ♥♥♥♥ up solitude. quite nice for when you're pissed off at this glitchy game)

For future use, I don't usually hurry to get Chillrend. It is leveled item and the most powerful version can be aquired at character level 46+.
