Unable to use Black Soul Gem

I am on the quest Rising At Dawn, so I can cancel the Vampirism which is on my character.
I have spoken to Falion in Morthal who will perform a ritual to cure the vampirism. I bought a Black Soul Gem from him which is in the Inventory.
However when I tried to equip it onto my character, I have to press E on the keyboard. When I press E , the Black Soul Gem does not transfer and the message comes up, "You cannot equip this item"
Can anyone tell me how to do this please?

You need to fill the soul gem, Falion sells you an empty one.

Yes Rez I have an empty one. I've attacked others but the soul gem has not filled. I just don't know what to do now.

are you useing a weapon that will capture a soul .

Are you killing the right targets - only by killing a humanoid NPC can you fill a black soul gem.

Make sure your weapon is charged before you kill a humanoid target, usually the player races, bandits are the preferable choice. If the weapon isn't working for some reason try the spell.

Thanks for your help folks. Can I use a two handed weapon or one, also do I keep the Black Soul Gem in the inventory or does it have to be on a hand.

You can use whatever weapon you want, but I would stick to either one-handed or two handed, it's better to master one weapon style rather than be mediocre in two.
You cannot equip a soul gem, it's just an inventory item.

The whole point is you need to soul trap the enemy, it can be with a weapon enchanted with soul trap, or you can cast the soul trap spell and kill the enemy while the spell is in effect.

Just make sure they are a player race and not a Falmer or similar.
