Not sure if it will work at the point you are, you may need to go back to a save from before Esbern pulled his cr*p, if possible.
Even then the Blades are a bunch of wet blankets, leave them to expire.
Seriously. What would your character do? Do that. If you character doesnt' want to kill Paarthurnax, then DON'T KILL PAARTHURNAX!!!! You don't have to do what Esbern tells you to. Seriously, you are not his puppet, you can do your own thing.
Okay, if it bugs the crap out of you that there's an unfinished quest, you might have a mild case of OCD. Sorry about that. But when even major cases of OCD can get on with life without killing people, I think you can manage without killing Paarthurnax.
Or get a mod. Whatever. But don't claim you "can't avoid" killing him, because you can. Now suck it up and get out there.
1. Activate quest before completing main questline.
2. Talk with Blades, Arngeir, Paarthurnax, make your choice.
3. Finish main quest.
Quest should completely disappear after your talk with Paarturnax about future of dragons. This has always worked in my games.
However, if this quest has been activated after main questline, then you are permanently stuck with it, unless you kill Paarthurnax. In this case mod is only solution.
