I seriously can't understand why Bethesda would shut down any mod projects. It's ridiculous. Besides this is not a replacement for ES Online, it's not an MMO, it's a coop project.
Tamriel Online's still a thing, has been at the "working" stage for ages, and was last updated just a few days ago.

That's not exactly what happened, though it's a common misconception. The main author also happened to start work on a server emulator for ESO, that got shut down, and he got slapped with however many legal restrictions by ZeniMax's legal team. He disappeared off the net for a while as a result.
The actual mod remained available, but it was simply the case that there was no one left working on it.

Thanks for the info
This is a lie.
I am the former Project Manager of Skyrim: Together. Everything you see in Skyrim Together is a direct product of my work. The creator of Skyrim Online did not get slapped with any legal anything; He got hired by Bethesda. Thats why he left Skyrim Online. He is now the lead developer of Skyrim: Together.
To make a long story short, You should be using tamriel online. Yamashi is a crooked man and basically took advantage of me and my attempts at making something that I could put on my university application. He lied and said Siegfre stole his code to make Tamriel online, Lied and told everybody I wasn't doing anything on the project (I still have screenshots of me attempting to lend a hand, and him refusing to let me anywhere near the github.) Then stole my project from me, and then quit his job at Bethesda, and ruined the entire project by removing the community server features. I have no doubt he is planning on selling it to Bethesda, when we originally were in an agreement to GIVE it to Bethesda, as it was, and put it on steam greenlight to be similar to the Just Cause Multiplayer Mod.
I worked for almost a year straight managing that project and Yamashi lied his way into it and convinced everybody I was a horrible leader and was doing nothing. Then convinced them to kick me out so he could take credit for the work he wasn't even there for the majority of.
Half the team left and I'd be surprised if they finished it. Tamriel Online was written twice in the amount of time it has taken them to finish NPC Sync. (No offense to Evayr. He was the only mature one there.)
Use Tamriel Online, not only is it better, but the community is better too. You can't get anything from Skyrim: Together that Tamriel online doesn't have, except less progress.
Also I know this thread is old. Just wanted to throw this in here for the public to see.
You're kinda quoting a whole lot of my text there; I assume you just mean this bit?:
"... he (Yamashi) got slapped with however many legal restrictions by ZeniMax's legal team."
I suppose getting hired by them would explain how that happened.
I see my original link has gone dead; to preserve a bit of context, here're the relevant bits pulled back from the Google cache[webcache.googleusercontent.com] (it's a discussion as to why Skyrim Online wasn't seeing any updates, noting that Bethesda didn't shut it down):
In any case, I believe it's true that Bethesda never C&D'd Skyrim Online.
Thanks for the update!
Eh, it's....
...well ya know, not Skyrim.
Um..how so? (Just looking for a little co-op thing)
It feels like a regular Ol' MMO with a modernized Oblivion skin.
Combat world, design, quest design, and story just feel like that of any other MMO. Doesn't resemble bethesda's game design.
It's not a terrible game, but like I said it's no online equivalent of Skyrim.
Wait dude I think your confused I mean the "MOD Skyrim together " not the MMO
