Where does the talking dog go?

I found a quest where you need to follow a talking dog, but i started lockpicking a gate, and then the dog was gone. Now i don't know at all where the dog went and can't find him lol

He goes to a cave somewhere, i think it was called "heamars shame" or something like that. Its somewhere under that huge mountain, southwest of Ivarsted. Dogs name is barbas.
Basically you do the quest and you get a deadric artifact, masque of clavicus vile, and it gives you like 25% better prices and something else
