Smithing mini-quest not working

When I start the smithing tutorial quest (usually, but not always, at Alvor's), I can only get as far as the Iron Dagger.

I make the dagger - and then the quest stops working. The smith steps to the side, awaiting my progress. But the quest marker doesn't move and the dialogue option to show him/her the dagger doesn't appear.

Exactly where is the quest marker pointing, and what is your log currently saying to do (verbatim, please)?

At the point when the quest stops working, the marker is pointing into the Blacksmith Forge, and the quest log says "Craft an Iron Dagger".

The problem being, of course, that this doesn't change even as I make the dagger. The quest simply stops.

I have tried waiting in game. And of course loading.

You may be running a mod which affects daggers - try dropping the one you made on the ground, opening console with the tilde key (~), then clicking on it. What're the first two characters of the code which appears?

I was able to "fix" it by fast traveling.

But thanks all the same. If it happens again, I will go back here and look up what you suggested.

@satayagraha: Thank you bro, you save my life. I got the same problem and was searching for this. Never thought fast travel would work, and I don't use it.
